Chapter 4 - The Recovery

In the weeks following the terrifying night at the mansion, the world outside the Montgomery estate transformed completely.

The story broke across national news channels: "Billionaire's Son Rescued From Wall; High-Society Stepmother and Government Brother Charged in Multi-Million Dollar Trust Fraud."

Isabella and Julian Hayes were held without bail at the Rikers Island Correctional Facility, facing federal charges of attempted murder, child endangerment, grand larceny, and state-level forgery. The evidence gathered from the ventilation shaft and the decrypted flash drive was so overwhelming that their high-priced defense attorneys were already scrambling to negotiate plea bargains.

Meanwhile, inside the Montgomery Estate, a very different transformation was taking place.

As promised, Arthur had officially hired me—not as a servant, but as Leo’s full-time personal guardian and estate supervisor, with a salary that guaranteed I would never have to worry about financial survival again. He assigned me a beautiful three-room suite in the East Wing, right across the hall from Leo's room.

"Look, Elena!" Leo giggled, running across the sunlit grass of the back lawn.

It was a bright afternoon in late autumn. The trauma of the wall was slowly fading, replaced by the healthy blush of a young boy playing outdoors. He was flying a large blue kite, his small feet dancing through the fallen orange leaves.

I sat on a wooden garden bench, sketching in a notepad, smiling as I watched him play.

"He hasn't had a nightmare in four days," Arthur’s voice sounded behind me.

I turned to see Arthur walking across the lawn, wearing a comfortable cashmere sweater and slacks, holding two cups of fresh coffee. The sharp, stress-lined businessman of three weeks ago seemed to have melted away, replaced by a man who looked younger, warmer, and deeply grounded.

He handed me a cup and sat down beside me on the bench.

"Dr. Harrison says his lung capacity is completely restored," I said, taking a warm sip. "And his hands have healed with no permanent scarring."

"That's because of you, Elena," Arthur said softly, looking at me with an intensity that made my heart skip a beat. "I watch him with you every day. He listens to you. He laughs with you. You've given my son his childhood back."

"He gave me a purpose, Arthur," I answered honestly, meeting his dark eyes. "Before that night, I was working three jobs, living in a broken studio apartment, surviving day to day. Saving Leo saved me too."

Arthur leaned closer, his shoulder resting gently against mine. "I spoke with my board of directors this morning. I’ve officially stepped down as active CEO of Montgomery Global Holdings. I transferred operational control to my executive vice president."

I looked at him in surprise. "You stepped down? You lived for that company."

"I thought I did," Arthur said, taking my hand in his. His grip was large, warm, and steady. "I spent fifteen years building a financial empire, thinking it was the most important thing I could leave behind. But standing in that ballroom, watching you pull my dying son out of a wall... I realized that an empire is worthless if your home is empty."

He looked out over the lawn at Leo, who was currently chasing the puppy Arthur had adopted for him two days ago.

"I want to build a life here now, Elena," Arthur whispered, turning his gaze back to my face. "A real life. With Leo. And... if you'll let me... with you."

My breath caught in my throat. For months, I had locked my emotions away, believing that a wealthy man like Arthur Montgomery belonged to a world I could only watch from the margins. But the warmth in his eyes, the genuine respect in his touch, was undeniable.

Before I could answer, Leo came running up the steps, panting, the puppy tumbling behind him.

"Elena! Daddy! Look!" Leo yelled happily, pointing to the sky. "The kite is higher than the trees!"

May you like

Arthur laughed, standing up and scooping Leo into his arms, tossing him into the air while the boy squealed with delight. He held his arm out to me, inviting me into their warmth.

I took his hand, stepping into the sunshine beside them. But deep inside, I knew that a wounded beast like Isabella Montgomery wouldn't go down without one final, desperate strike.
