Chapter 7 - The Final Desperate Strike

With the media narrative completely shattered and the video evidence of the crime broadcast globally, Isabella’s legal defense crumbled overnight.

Facing fifty years in federal prison, Isabella’s high-priced legal team formally requested a bail hearing, claiming she needed emergency psychiatric evaluation at a private facility.

On a rainy Tuesday evening, while Arthur was meeting with federal prosecutors downtown to finalize the plea terms, I stayed at the estate with Leo.

The house was quiet. Rain drummed steadily against the high glass windows of the conservatory. Leo was sitting on the rug, building a elaborate wooden castle with his toy blocks, while the puppy slept near the fireplace.

"Elena?" Leo asked, looking up at me with his big brown eyes. "Is the bad lady ever coming back?"

I knelt beside him on the rug, gently smoothing his hair. "No, Leo. The bad lady is in a place where she can never hurt anyone again. The police are keeping her far away from us."

"Good," Leo whispered, hugging his plush rabbit. "Because I want you to be my mommy now."

My heart swelled with such overwhelming love that I felt tears sting my eyes. I pulled the little boy into a soft hug, kissing the top of his head. "I will always take care of you, Leo. I promise."

Suddenly, the lights throughout the mansion flickered violently and died completely.

The grand conservatory was plunged into total darkness, illuminated only by the faint silver flashes of lightning from the rainstorm outside.

The emergency generator should have kicked on within three seconds, but the house remained pitch black and silent.

"Elena?" Leo whimpered, his small hands instantly clutching my sweater in panic. "The lights went out!"

"It's okay, baby," I whispered, pulling my smartphone from my pocket and turning on the flashlight beam. "It's just the storm. Stay right behind me."

I held Leo tightly against my hip, moving cautiously toward the main hallway to find Douglas and the security guards.

As we stepped into the marble corridor, the front double doors of the mansion creaked open. Cold rain and wind whipped into the foyer.

A tall figure stepped through the threshold, holding a flashlight in one hand and a heavy steel wrench in the other.

"Hello, servant girl," a raspy, unhinged voice echoed through the dark hallway.

My blood ran cold. It wasn't a mercenary or a burglar.

It was Isabella Montgomery.

She wore a mud-stained trench coat, her hair wild and matted from the rain, her eyes wide with a manic, terrifying madness. She had somehow escaped from the psychiatric holding facility during her court transport, cutting her electronic tracking ankle monitor and using her insider knowledge of the estate’s power grid to disable the main breakers.

"Isabella..." I breathed, taking a slow step backward into the shadows of the staircase, keeping Leo behind my back.

"You ruined my life!" Isabella shrieked, her voice echoing hysterically off the high marble ceilings. "I spent three years planning that trust fund transfer! I was supposed to be a hundred-millionaire living in Paris! And you... a pathetic, dirty catering girl... pulled him out of the wall!"

May you like

She raised the heavy steel wrench, stepping rapidly across the marble floor toward us.

"If I can't have the Montgomery fortune," Isabella screamed, "then neither will Arthur!"
