Chapter 5 - The Venom in the Press

The calm that had settled over the estate was abruptly shattered two weeks later by a smear campaign unleashed across the state’s tabloids.
Isabella’s high-society family, desperate to shift public sympathy and save their remaining corporate reputation, hired a notorious public relations operative named Victor Vance (no relation to the corporate attorney).
Headline across three major city newspapers read: "THE WAITRESS INFILTRATOR: Did Catering Worker Stage Trust Fund Rescue to Trap Billionaire?"
The articles published forged records claiming that I had a history of financial fraud, that I had intentionally applied for the catering job at the Montgomery estate weeks in advance, and that I had coerced six-year-old Leo into lying about being locked in the wall to frame Isabella.
"This is unconscionable!" Arthur roared in his private office, slamming the newspaper onto his oak desk so hard the coffee cups rattled. "They are attacking a girl who saved my child! I will buy every single one of those media companies and burn them to the ground!"
Attorney Vance stood near the fireplace, holding a thick legal file. "Arthur, calm down. This is a classic defense tactic. They know the physical evidence against Isabella is insurmountable. Their only hope is to create reasonable doubt in a potential jury pool by turning Elena into a villainous gold-digger who manipulated a grieving father."
I sat on the velvet sofa, holding my cup of tea, my knuckles white. Reading lies about myself in national print brought back the old, suffocating shame of my childhood—the feeling of being powerless against people with money and influence.
"They brought up my stepfather," I said softly, my voice trembling slightly. "They interviewed him. He told the reporters that I was a delinquent who ran away from home."
Arthur immediately walked across the room, dropping to one knee in front of the sofa. He took both of my hands in his, forcing me to look into his eyes. "Elena, look at me. None of those lies matter. I know who you are. Leo knows who you are. The police know who you are."
"The public doesn't, Arthur," I whispered. "If this goes to trial, they will put me on the witness stand and pick my entire life apart. They will try to make me look like a criminal in front of Leo."
"They will never get the chance," Arthur said, his voice dropping into a cold, dangerous register that sent a chill through the room. "They think they can play dirty media games with my family? They forget how I built my empire."
Arthur stood up, turning to Attorney Vance. "Call a national press conference for two o'clock tomorrow afternoon at the Montgomery Plaza Hotel."
"Arthur," Vance cautioned. "Submitting to a live press conference gives the tabloid reporters a platform to grill Elena directly."
May you like
"She isn't going to be grilled," Arthur declared, a lethal, confident smile touching his lips. "She is going to sit beside me. And I am going to expose every single ledger, bribe, and secret offshore account the Hayes family has used for twenty years."
He looked down at me, extending his hand. "We stand together, Elena. From now on, nobody fights you without fighting me first."
