Chapter 9 - The Promise on the Terrace

Six months later.

Spring had arrived in full bloom across the Hudson River Valley. The Montgomery Estate was no longer a cold, imposing fortress of secrets. The dark iron gates were left open during the day, surrounded by sprawling fields of bright yellow daffodils, pink cherry blossoms, and green grass.

The heavy ventilation shaft in the kitchen had been completely removed during a full renovation, replaced by a massive, sunlit breakfast nook with floor-to-ceiling glass windows that looked out over the gardens.

Isabella Montgomery had been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole at a maximum-security state facility, while her brother Julian received thirty years for federal corruption and forgery. The Hayes family empire was entirely bankrupt, their stolen assets restored to Leo's trust fund.

It was a warm Sunday afternoon.

Seven-year-old Leo was sitting at the wooden picnic table on the back terrace, happily painting a watercolor picture of our puppy sleeping in the grass. His cheeks were healthy and pink, his smile constant, his laughter filling the open air.

I sat beside him, wearing a light linen sun dress, helping him mix shades of green and blue on his palette.

"Look, Elena!" Leo giggled, holding up his painting. "I painted our family!"

I looked at the paper. It showed a tall man, a smiling woman holding hands with a little boy, and a puppy playing at their feet. Beneath the drawing, in messy seven-year-old handwriting, it read: "MY FAMILY."

A lump formed in my throat, my eyes shining with happy tears. "It's the most beautiful painting I've ever seen, Leo."

Footsteps sounded on the stone terrace.

Arthur walked out of the house, wearing a crisp white shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows. He walked over to the table, leaning down to kiss the top of Leo's head before coming around to stand beside my chair.

"Leo," Arthur said with a bright smile. "Why don't you take the puppy down to the garden to show Douglas your painting?"

"Okay, Daddy!" Leo cheered, carefully picking up his artwork and running down the lawn with the dog bounding happily beside him.

Arthur watched his son run for a moment before turning his attention back to me. He reached out his hand, inviting me to stand up.

I took his hand, stepping up to the edge of the stone terrace, where the view swept out over the sparkling river below.

"You've been quiet today, Arthur," I said with a soft smile, leaning my shoulder against his arm. "What are you thinking about?"

Arthur pulled a small, velvet-lined mahogany box from his pocket. He turned to face me, his dark eyes brimming with a depth of love and respect that took my breath away.

"I'm thinking about the night I found you on the floor of my dining hall," Arthur said softly, his voice trembling slightly with emotion. "I was a broken, foolish man who had lost his way. I had all the money in the world, but I was living in utter darkness."

He slowly dropped to one knee on the sunlit stone terrace.

"You brought light back into this house, Elena," Arthur whispered, opening the velvet box to reveal a magnificent, flawless pear-cut diamond ring that sparkled like sunlight on water. "You saved my son's life, you fought for his safety, and you taught me what a real family feels like."

He looked up into my eyes, laying his entire heart completely open.

"Elena Vance... will you do us the honor of becoming my wife? Will you be Leo's mother, and my partner for the rest of our lives?"

Tears of pure, overwhelming joy ran down my cheeks. I didn't hesitate for a single second.

"Yes, Arthur," I whispered, stepping forward into his arms. "Yes! A thousand times yes!"

Arthur slipped the ring onto my finger, standing up to pull me into a deep, passionate kiss that sealed our promise under the bright blue sky.

From down the lawn, Leo came running back up the steps, cheering loudly and clapping his little hands. "Yay! Elena is going to stay forever!"

Arthur pulled Leo up into our arms, and together, the three of us held each other tightly on the terrace, our laughter floating across the blooming garden.
