Chapter 2 - The Red Velvet Sabotage

The news of our engagement sent shockwaves through the Caldwell family. Victoria was furious that Ethan had proposed without her explicit approval, but rather than banning the event, she insisted on hosting the engagement party at the private Lakeside Country Club. She claimed it was a gesture of goodwill. In reality, it was a trap meticulously set to destroy my dignity in front of two hundred elite guests.

In the weeks leading up to the party, I deliberately chose not to inform my grandfather, Graham Foster. My grandfather lived a quiet life on a sprawling, multi-million-dollar ranch in Oregon. To the world, he looked like an eccentric, retired old farmer who wore flannel shirts and mended his own fences. In truth, Graham Foster was a legendary real estate tycoon and philanthropist who had stepped away from the public eye decades ago after my parents died, devoting his life entirely to raising me.

"Evelyn," my grandfather had told me over the phone when I called him earlier that week, "if these people treat you with anything less than absolute respect, you walk away. You don't need their permission to be happy, and you certainly don't need their money."

"I know, Grandpa," I replied, smiling gently. "Ethan loves me for who I am. He doesn't know about the family trust or your background, and I want to keep it that way for now. I want to build a life with him based on what we create together."

"Just remember who you are, my girl," Graham said warmly. "A Foster never crawls for anyone."

The night of the engagement party arrived. I spent weeks searching for a dress that was elegant yet within my budget. I found a simple, stunning emerald-green vintage dress at an estate sale for a hundred dollars. It fit me perfectly, emphasizing my silhouette without being ostentatious. I felt confident, beautiful, and ready to face Ethan’s family as his equal.

However, as Ethan and I entered the grand ballroom of the Lakeside Country Club, the atmosphere turned instantly hostile. The room was a sea of designer gowns, diamonds, and tailored tuxedos. Glances were exchanged, whispers rippled through the crowd, and smirks were flashed behind champagne glasses.

Victoria Caldwell approached us, her eyes instantly locking onto my dress. The polite facade she had maintained earlier completely dissolved.

“We’re a wealthy family, and you showed up to your engagement party in a cheap dress?” Victoria sneered, her voice carrying across the immediate circle of guests. Several wealthy onlookers turned, chuckling softly.

"Mother, stop it," Ethan said angrily, stepping forward to block her view of me. "Evelyn looks radiant."

"She looks like she bought her attire from a clearance rack at a bus station!" Victoria snapped back, her eyes flashing with cold disgust. "This is an insult to our family name, Ethan. You are parading a beggar in front of our closest associates."

Before Ethan could respond, Chloe stepped into the circle, holding a glass of dark red Cabernet Sauvignon. Her face was twisted in a malicious grin.

"Oh, let me help her fix that budget look," Chloe sneered.

With a swift, calculated movement, Chloe threw the entire glass of red wine directly onto the chest of my emerald dress. The deep red liquid soaked through the fabric instantly, turning the delicate material into a ruined, soggy mess.

I gasped, taking a step back, but Chloe wasn't finished. Stepping closer under the pretense of "helping," she reached out, grabbed the delicate lace shoulder strap of my dress, and forcefully yanked it downward. The fabric tore with a loud, sickening rip, exposing my shoulder and rending the dress completely ruined.

Chloe leaned in close, her breath smelling of alcohol, and spat directly onto the floor near my shoes.

"Get out of our club, you worthless gold-digger," Chloe spat, her voice ringing clear in the sudden silence of the ballroom.
