Chapter 6 - The Reckoning in Emerald

The sound of shattering glass echoed through the immediate vicinity, but no one paid attention to Victoria Caldwell. Every eye in the ballroom was fixed on the couple descending the stairs.

Chloe stared at me, her mouth open in absolute horror, her face turning as white as a sheet. "No... no, that's impossible... That's the hotel girl... That's Evelyn!"

"What is the meaning of this?!" Richard Caldwell gasped, clutching his chest as his eyes darted from Ethan to me, and finally to Graham Foster, who was looking down at the crowd with an expression of cold judgment.

Ethan and I walked down the final steps, the crowd parting respectfully to let us pass. High-profile executives and politicians bowed their heads in greeting, offering warm congratulations to my grandfather and me.

I guided my grandfather directly toward the frozen, trembling Caldwell family.

"Mrs. Caldwell, Miss Caldwell, Mr. Caldwell," I said, my voice smooth, elegant, and entirely devoid of fear. "Thank you for attending our gala tonight."

Victoria stammered, her usual venom completely vanishing, replaced by absolute panic. "Evelyn... You... You are Graham Foster's..."

"My granddaughter," Graham Foster interrupted, his voice dropping like an anvil in the silence. "Evelyn Foster. My sole heiress."

"Grandpa," I said gently, looking at Victoria's ghostly pale face. "Mrs. Caldwell was just telling me a few weeks ago how much she appreciates high fashion. I hope my dress meets her strict standards tonight. It’s custom, of course."

Victoria felt as though the air had been sucked out of her lungs. Her mind raced back to the engagement party—to the insults, the sneers, the humiliation she had inflicted upon the most powerful young woman in the state. She had treated the heiress of a multi-billion-dollar empire like a street beggar.

"Evelyn... my dear..." Victoria squeaked, taking a desperate step forward, her hands shaking uncontrollably. "There has been... a terrible misunderstanding! That night... Chloe was... we were just stressed! We didn't know—"

"You didn't know I was rich," I corrected her coldly, stepping closer so only the five of us could hear. "Because to you, human dignity is only granted to those with deep pockets. If I had been a poor hotel clerk, your cruelty would have been perfectly acceptable in your eyes, wouldn't it?"

"Evelyn, please," Chloe pleaded, tears of terror welling in her eyes as she realized the social catastrophe unfolding. "I... I spill wine all the time! It was an accident! I'm so sorry!"

"An accident doesn't tear a woman's dress off her shoulder and spit at her feet, Chloe," Ethan spoke up, his voice filled with utter disgust. "You revealed exactly who you are."

Richard Caldwell stepped forward, his forehead glistening with cold sweat. "Mr. Foster... Ethan... please. We are family. We can resolve this privately."

"Family?" Graham Foster scoffed quietly. "You disowned Ethan forty-eight hours ago. And as for business... Arthur, step forward."

Arthur Vance stepped out from behind my grandfather, pulling a blue legal portfolio from his briefcase and handing it directly to Richard Caldwell.

"Mr. Caldwell," Vance announced clearly enough for nearby guests to hear. "Vantage Capital has completed its structural review of your commercial loan portfolio. Due to multiple covenant breaches and character risk assessments, Vantage Capital is calling in the full repayment of your three-hundred-million-dollar credit facility. You have seventy-two hours to settle the balance in full."

May you like

Richard’s knees buckled. He stumbled backward, barely caught by Chloe. "Seventy-two hours?! That's financial execution! We don't have that cash on hand!"

"Then I suggest you start liquidating your estate, Mr. Caldwell," I whispered softly. "Starting with your country club memberships."
