Chapter 7 - The Downward Spiral

The collapse of Caldwell Enterprises was swift, brutal, and entirely public. News of Vantage Capital calling in their massive debt broke across financial news outlets the following morning. Within forty-eight hours, credit rating agencies downgraded Caldwell Enterprises to junk status. Share prices plummeted by eighty percent as panicked investors pulled their capital out of Caldwell projects.

The social elite, sensing blood in the water, turned on Victoria Caldwell with terrifying speed. The very women who had laughed at my expense at the engagement party now canceled Victoria’s invitations, removed her from charitable boards, and blocked her phone number. The Caldwell name had become toxic overnight.

In an effort to save their primary business from total liquidation, Richard Caldwell was forced to put their prized Atherton mansion on the auction block, along with their private yacht, fine art collection, and luxury vehicles.

Ethan watched all of this unfold from a distance. While he took no pleasure in his family's destruction, he felt no sympathy for their plight either. They had brought this upon themselves through years of arrogance, greed, and unbridled cruelty.

One afternoon, while Ethan and I were visiting my grandfather’s estate in Sonoma, Ethan received a panicked phone call from Chloe.

Ethan put the call on speakerphone at my nod.

"Ethan! You have to help us!" Chloe sobbed hysterically into the phone. "The bank sent bailiffs to the house! They are tagging Mom's jewelry and taking Dad's cars! Mom has been locking herself in her bedroom crying for two days! We have nowhere to go!"

"Chloe," Ethan replied calmly, his voice steady. "You still have your personal savings, don't you?"

"My savings?!" Chloe shrieked. "I spent my allowance on clothes and trips! I only have twenty thousand dollars left! How am I supposed to live on twenty thousand dollars?! That won't even cover my shopping expenses for two months!"

"Then I suggest you get a job," Ethan said coldly. "There’s a hotel in Sacramento looking for shift workers. I hear the pay is modest, but it teaches you humility."

"Ethan! How can you be so heartless?!" Chloe screamed. "This is all because of that stupid girl! Tell her to call off her grandfather! Tell her to give us back our life!"

"She didn't destroy your life, Chloe," Ethan said firmly. "Your own hatred did. Goodbye."

Ethan hung up the phone and looked over at me. I was sitting on the porch, watching the sun set over the vineyards, holding a cup of hot black tea.

"Are you okay?" I asked him softly.

Ethan walked over, wrapped his arms around my shoulders, and kissed the top of my head. "I've never felt freer, Evelyn. For the first time in my life, I am completely clear of their shadow."
