Chapter 1 - The Footage Unmasked

The small, blue light of my smartphone screen was the only source of warmth in the cold hotel room near Zapopan. Louisa was sound asleep beside me, her chest rising and falling rhythmically, one tiny hand still clutching her stuffed bunny. Her hairless scalp, raw with faint red lines from Lydia’s careless clippers, broke my heart every time my eyes drifted back to her.

My fingers trembled as the cloud application loaded the video archives. The hidden camera—disguised inside an unassuming black digital clock nestled on the top shelf of the living room bookshelf—had been installed two years ago when we briefly hired an outside nanny. When the nanny left, I simply forgot to uninstall it. It recorded continuously to an encrypted cloud server whenever motion was detected.

I scrolled back to Tuesday afternoon, the precise day Lydia claimed her precious gold bracelet went missing.

The first clip showed Louisa sitting quietly on the living room rug around 2:00 PM, coloring in her picture book. She was completely oblivious to the adults around her. A few minutes later, Lydia entered the frame holding her velvet jewelry box. She set it down on the coffee table while looking for her reading glasses.

Then came the second clip, timestamped at 2:34 PM.

Lydia left the room to check on something in the kitchen. In that brief window, Heather stepped into the living room. She glanced around nervously, her eyes darting toward the hallway. Seeing no one, she snatched the velvet box, opened it with practiced speed, and slipped the heavy gold bracelet into her jacket pocket. But Heather didn’t stop there. She took a small silver coin purse—something Lydia rarely used—and slipped it behind the sofa cushions near where Louisa was playing.

My throat tightened. It was a setup from the very beginning.

Heather had stolen the bracelet, but she knew Lydia would notice immediately. To divert suspicion, she placed fake evidence near a three-year-old child who couldn't defend herself or explain what happened.

I kept watching. What followed at 4:00 PM made my blood run cold.

Lydia discovered the bracelet was gone and began shrieking. Heather immediately walked over to the sofa, reached behind the cushion, and pulled out the coin purse, gasping dramatically. “Look, Mom! Louisa must have been playing with your things!”

Instead of checking the drawers or asking questions, Lydia flew into a rage. Walter slammed his beer bottle onto the counter. The video showed Walter grabbing Louisa by her arm, dragging her into the bathroom despite her terrified screams, while Lydia followed with a set of hair clippers. Heather stood by the door, scrolling on her phone with a faint, chilling smile on her face.

I paused the video. Tears rolled down my cheeks, hot and bitter. It wasn't just cruel; it was calculated malice. They wanted to humiliate my daughter and degrade me because I was an outsider who came into their family with nothing. And Elmer—my spineless husband—had told me to apologize to them.

I saved all the raw video files to three separate cloud storage drives and downloaded them directly onto a flash drive I kept in my purse.

My lip was still swollen from Walter’s blow, but the pain in my face was nothing compared to the ice settling in my heart. The time for crying was over. I wasn't just a grieving mother anymore; I was a woman with nothing left to lose and proof of their crimes.

I leaned over and kissed Louisa’s cool forehead. "I promise you, sweetheart," I whispered into the quiet night, "they will pay for every single tear."
