Chapter 2 - The Silent War Begins

The morning sun broke through the curtains of the hotel room. Louisa woke up early, her tiny hands immediately reaching for her head. When she felt the bare skin, she flinched and pulled the blanket over her face.
"Mommy... are people going to laugh at me?" she whimpered, her voice muffled by the sheets.
I pulled the blanket down gently and smiled at her with all the confidence I could muster. "No one is going to laugh at you, darling. You look like a beautiful warrior princess. And today, we are going to buy you the prettiest hats in the entire world."
We spent the morning at a nearby shopping center. I bought her soft silk beanies, colorful berets, and a small pink coat. I also bought a burner phone and a new SIM card. Elmer’s phone number was still blocked on my primary line, but I knew he would try to reach me through other means once he realized I wasn’t backing down.
Sure enough, when I logged into my email at a local coffee shop, my inbox was flooded with messages from Elmer.
“Joanna, where are you? My mom said you stole her car keys before you left!” “Joanna, pick up! My dad is furious. You made him look bad in front of the neighbors!” “If you don’t bring Louisa back by tonight, I’m filing for full custody on grounds of parental abduction!”
I read each message with a cold, detached amusement. Elmer didn't ask if his daughter was okay. He didn't ask why my face was bruised. His only concern was his family's pride and control.
I opened a blank draft and typed a short response to Elmer:
“I have not stolen anything. Do not attempt to track us. I am giving you one chance to tell your parents to leave Columbus immediately, or the consequence will be permanent.”
I hit send and immediately shut down the laptop.
My next stop was the office of Marcus Vance, one of the most ruthless family law and criminal defense attorneys in the state. I had found his firm through a quick search, and his reputation for tearing abusive spouses to pieces in court was legendary.
When I sat in Marcus's leather-bound office, he looked at my split lip and then down at Louisa, who was quietly playing with her stuffed bunny on the office rug, wearing a bright purple beanie.
"Mrs. Vance," Marcus said, leaning back in his chair. "Tell me everything from the beginning."
I laid it all out: the years of quiet emotional abuse from Lydia and Walter, Elmer's absolute subordination to his parents, the financial control they tried to exert over my modest earnings, and finally, yesterday's nightmare.
When I finished, I placed the flash drive on his desk.
"What is this?" Marcus asked.
" footage from a hidden security camera inside their living room," I said calmly. "It shows Heather stealing the bracelet, Lydia and Walter shaving my daughter's head, and Walter striking me across the face."
Marcus picked up the flash drive. He plugged it into his computer and watched the clips in silence. As the video played, I saw the veteran attorney's jaw tighten. The professional composure vanished, replaced by genuine disgust.
"This isn't just a divorce case, Joanna," Marcus said, turning his screen back toward me. "This is felony assault on a minor, child abuse, felony assault on an adult, and false accusation. If we play this right, your husband and his family won't just lose custody—they might lose their freedom."

"I don't just want custody, Mr. Vance," I said, my voice steady and deadly serious. "I want them completely removed from our lives. I want a restraining order, full legal and physical custody, and I want them to answer for what they did to my daughter."
Marcus smiled—a sharp, cold smile. "Consider it done. But first, we file a police report."
