Chapter 4 - The Raid at Dawn

At 7:00 AM the following morning, three marked police cruisers and an unmarked detective vehicle pulled up outside the apartment building where Lydia and Walter lived—the same apartment where I had been struck three days earlier.

I sat in the passenger seat of Marcus’s sedan parked across the street, watching through tinted windows. Louisa was with a certified child caregiver at Marcus's office, safe and far away from the storm about to unfold.

Officer Davis and Detective Miller walked up the concrete steps toward the front entrance, accompanied by two armed officers. They carried a search warrant for the premises and arrest warrants for Walter, Lydia, and Heather.

Through the large front window of the first-floor apartment, I could see the family gathered around the breakfast table. Lydia was pouring coffee; Walter was reading the newspaper; Elmer was sitting in his bathrobe, looking smug; and Heather was lounging on the couch with her phone. They had no idea their world was about to collapse.

Detective Miller knocked heavily on the door.

From across the street, I couldn't hear the initial words, but I saw the front door swing open. Elmer appeared, looking annoyed. He gestured aggressively, clearly demanding to know why the police were at his parents' house.

Detective Miller didn't waste time. He pushed past Elmer, pulling out a folded piece of paper.

Within seconds, total chaos erupted inside the apartment.

Lydia came running from the kitchen, screaming and waving her arms. Walter stepped forward, puffing out his chest and pointing a finger in Detective Miller’s face, just as he had done to me days prior. But Detective Miller wasn't a defenseless daughter-in-law.

When Walter shoved Detective Miller’s shoulder, two officers immediately grabbed Walter, twisted his arms behind his back, and slammed him against the dining room wall. The metallic click of handcuffs echoed even across the quiet street.

"You can't do this! Do you know who I am?" Walter bellowed, his face turning an angry shade of purple.

"Walter Vance, you are under arrest for felony domestic battery and child abuse," Detective Miller announced loudly.

Lydia shrieked, dropping her coffee cup, which shattered on the tile floor. "He didn't do anything! That lying bitch of a daughter-in-law made this up! She’s the thief!"

Officer Davis stepped toward Lydia. "Lydia Vance, you are under arrest for child cruelty and endangerment."

Elmer was panicking now, stumbling backward, trying to explain that it was all a "family misunderstanding."

"Where is Heather Vance?" Detective Miller demanded.

Heather tried to slip toward the back bedroom, but Officer Davis cut her off, grabbing her arm and pulling her back into the living room.

"What did I do?" Heather shrieked, struggling against Officer Davis's grip. "I didn't touch the kid!"

"Heather Vance, you are under arrest for grand larceny, filing a false police report, and felony extortion," Detective Miller declared.

"Larceny? What larceny?" Lydia screamed, tears ruining her makeup. "She didn't steal anything!"

Detective Miller reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a clear evidence bag containing a printout of the video stills from my hidden camera, along with a copy of Heather's text message to me.

"We have video footage of your daughter stealing your gold bracelet from your velvet box on Tuesday at 2:34 PM," Detective Miller said coldly. "She framed your three-year-old granddaughter. And then she tried to extort $5,000 from your daughter-in-law."

Lydia froze. Her eyes went wide, staring at Heather in utter shock. "What... what did he say?"

Heather’s face drained of all color. She looked at her mother, then at the police officers, her mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. "Mom... no... it’s a lie! She modified the video!"

"The video is cryptographically timestamped and verified by cloud servers, Miss Vance," Detective Miller replied smoothly.

Lydia turned on her own daughter, her voice cracking into a horrified screech. "You? YOU took my mother's bracelet? You let me shave the baby's head for YOUR theft?"

"Mom, shut up!" Heather yelled back, collapsing into tears as the handcuffs were slapped onto her wrists.

I watched from the car as all three of them—Walter, Lydia, and Heather—were led out of the apartment building in handcuffs, lined up like common criminals, and shoved into the back of the police cruisers.

Elmer stood on the sidewalk in his bathrobe, looking completely paralyzed, abandoned, and broken.

I rolled down my window slightly as Marcus pulled our car up alongside the curb right in front of Elmer.

Elmer saw me in the passenger seat. He rushed toward the car, his eyes desperate. "Joanna! Joanna, stop this! What have you done? You're destroying my family!"

I rolled down the window just enough to look him dead in the eye.

May you like

"No, Elmer," I said with absolute clarity. "Your family destroyed itself. And you watched them do it."

I rolled the window back up, and Marcus drove away, leaving Elmer standing alone on the cold pavement.
