Chapter 3 - The Trap is Set

An hour later, two police officers arrived at Marcus’s office to take my formal statement. I showed them my swollen lip, allowed them to photograph the bruise forming along my cheekbone, and let them examine Louisa. The female officer, Officer Davis, had tears in her eyes when she gently took photos of Louisa’s scalp.

"This is atrocious," Officer Davis muttered, writing furiously in her notebook. "We can issue an emergency protection order immediately."

"Not yet," Marcus intervened smoothly. "We want the police to serve the warrant while the entire family is gathered at the apartment. Elmer is returning from Indianapolis tonight. They think Joanna is hiding in fear. Let them build their false narrative first."

Marcus was playing a masterclass of psychological chess. If we moved too quickly, Lydia and Walter would hire a lawyer, construct a fake defense, or hide Heather's involvement. We needed them to dig their own grave deeper.

That afternoon, I received a text from an unknown number. It was Heather.

“Hey sister-in-law! Just so you know, Mom called the police on you for child endangerment. They’re looking for you. If you bring $5,000 in cash to cover the cost of Mom’s stolen bracelet and apologize on your knees, maybe we can convince Dad not to press charges.”

I stared at the screen, a chilling satisfaction washing over me. Heather was so arrogant, so confident in her impunity, that she was now attempting to extort me via text message.

I took a screenshot and forwarded it directly to Marcus.

“Keep accumulating the evidence,” Marcus replied instantly. “She just added extortion to her list of felony charges.”

Meanwhile, I took Louisa to a child psychologist recommended by Marcus’s firm, Dr. Aris Thorne. Louisa sat in the comfortable therapy room, clinging to her pink beanie. Dr. Thorne was gentle, using art therapy to help her process the trauma.

While Louisa drew pictures with crayons, Dr. Thorne walked over to me in the corner of the room.

"She is deeply traumatized, Joanna," Dr. Thorne whispered softly. "She keeps drawing a large black monster with clippers and a shadow hitting a smaller figure. The emotional damage from being humiliated by her own grandparents is severe. I will prepare an official psychological evaluation for the court. It will carry immense weight."

"Thank you, Doctor," I said, squeezing my hands together. "I just want her to feel safe again."

"She will," Dr. Thorne assured me. "Because she has a mother who is fighting for her."

That evening, Elmer arrived back in Columbus. As expected, he didn't call me to ask where we were; instead, he went straight to his parents' apartment.

Around 9:00 PM, my burner phone rang. It was Elmer calling from his mother's phone. I hit record on a secondary device and answered.

"Joanna! Where the hell are you?" Elmer roared through the speaker. "My mother is hysterical! My dad is nursing a headache because of the stress you caused! How dare you leave with my daughter?"

"Elmer," I said, keeping my tone perfectly flat. "Your father hit me. Your mother shaved our daughter's head."

"She was teaching her a lesson!" Elmer yelled back, completely unbothered by the horror of his words. "Louisa stole a family heirloom! My mom had every right to discipline her! You’re acting like a crazy person. If you aren't back here in thirty minutes with an apology, I’m calling the cops and telling them you abused Louisa yourself!"

"You really believe I should apologize?" I asked gently, laying the trap.

"Yes! You owe my mother everything! You came from nothing, Joanna! My family took you in! Now bring my daughter home before I destroy you!"

"Goodnight, Elmer," I said softly, and hung up.

I turned to Marcus, who was sitting across from me in the hotel lobby where we had met to review documents.

"Did you get that recording?" Marcus asked.

May you like

"Every single word," I replied.

Marcus nodded with deep satisfaction. "Elmer just made himself an accomplice to child abuse and extortion. Tomorrow morning, the trap closes."
