Chapter 1 - The Ash in the Breeze

The peace Claire Whitman had fought so hard to secure was a masterpiece of her own design, but as the autumn of 2026 rolled into the Pearl District, the first cold winds of October brought a familiar chill.
The rooftop garden of her brownstone was finally complete. From its edge, Claire could look down at the sprawling, historic streets of the city she had vowed to make safe. Her new firm, Whitman Safeguard, had already gained a reputation for restoring older, vulnerable structures and making them fireproof, earthquake-resistant, and secure. But as she stood near the edge of the parapet, watching the falling leaves, she noticed a strange smell.
It wasn’t the scent of roasting coffee or crisp rain. It was the acrid, chemical scent of burning plastic and accelerant.
She hurried downstairs to the front vestibule of the brownstone. On the polished marble threshold lay a small, black velvet pouch. Inside was nothing but a handful of cold, gray wood ash and a single, charred piece of paper. On the paper, written in an elegant, looping cursive she recognized instantly, were three words:
"Fire never dies."
Claire’s breath caught in her throat. The handwriting belonged to her mother, Victoria Whitman, who was supposed to be serving a maximum-security prison sentence for arson, fraud, and the attempted murder of her own daughter.
Her phone rang. It was Daniel Reyes, his voice sharp and alert. "Claire, where are you?"
"I’m at the brownstone, Daniel. I just found... a package on my doorstep. It’s her."

"I’m on my way," Daniel said, the sound of his car engine roaring in the background. "Don't open the door for anyone. I just got a call from the state penitentiary. Victoria Whitman escaped custody during a medical transfer two hours ago."
The fortress Claire had built was solid, but the wolves were no longer in their cages. The hunt had begun again.
