Chapter 9 - The Final Trap

The rain had stopped, leaving the Portland waterfront shrouded in a thick, gray fog. Claire and Daniel slipped through the rusted chain-link fence of the old Whitman shipping yards, their flashlights cutting through the mist.

Guided by the coordinates from her grandmother's vellum map, they navigated the maze of decaying shipping containers until they reached the foundation of the main warehouse.

"The entrance to the vault should be under the old crane assembly," Claire whispered.

They found a heavy steel hatch, partially hidden beneath a pile of rusted iron plates. Using her grandmother's key, Claire unlocked the ancient mechanism. The hatch swung open, revealing a stone staircase leading down into the earth.

But as they stepped into the underground chamber, the heavy steel door slammed shut behind them.

The overhead lights flickered on, illuminating a cavernous, concrete bunker filled with archival boxes, historic maps—and Victoria Whitman.

Her mother stood at the center of the room, holding a glowing flare. She looked older, her face haggard from prison, but her eyes held that same chaotic, destructive fire. Behind her stood Alastair Thorne, a silenced pistol in his hand.

"Welcome home, Claire," Victoria whispered, a chilling smile on her lips. "I always knew you’d find the way. You always were her favorite."

"It's over, Mother," Claire said, her voice steady as she stood beside Daniel. "The federal authorities have Thorne's accounts. The board has cleared my name. You have nowhere left to run."

"We don't need to run, my dear," Thorne said, raising the pistol. "Once we burn this vault with you inside, the historical deeds are gone. The city will have no choice but to let my development go through. It will look like a tragic, subterranean gas explosion."

"You won't escape the smoke this time, Claire," Victoria hissed, dropping the flare onto a trail of gasoline that ran along the concrete floor.
