Chapter 3 - The Cryptic Journal

The library smelled of old paper and beeswax as Claire unlocked the reinforced glass display case. She took out her grandmother’s journal and placed it on the mahogany desk. Beside it, she laid the small brass key with the purple, burn-marked tag.
For months, she had kept the key as a keepsake, a symbol of her survival. But now, she realized it had a practical purpose.
"Look at the spine of the journal, Daniel," Claire said, pointing to a small, brass-reinforced grommet at the base of the leather binding. "It’s not just a decoration."
She inserted the tiny brass key into the grommet. With a soft, mechanical click, the back cover of the journal popped open, revealing a hollowed-out compartment. Inside lay a single, micro-thin sheet of vellum paper covered in architectural coordinates and a signature dating back to 1948.
"It's a subterranean map," Daniel breathed, leaning over her shoulder. "These coordinates... they aren't under the Pearl District. They are beneath the old Portland seawall, right under the foundations of the shipping yards Thorne is trying to buy."
"My grandmother didn't just own the land," Claire realized, her heart pounding. "She built an underground vault to protect the city's original charter deeds. If Thorne builds his high-rises there, he’ll destroy the vaults, erase the historical preservation status of the waterfront, and claim billions in unchecked development rights."

"And if we expose the vault first," Daniel said, "the land becomes a protected federal heritage site. Thorne’s entire corporate empire will collapse under the weight of his fraudulent leverage."
"We have to get down there," Claire said. "Before they realize we've cracked the code."
