Chapter 2 - The Toxicology Reckoning

The next four hours were a descent into a living nightmare, lit only by the steady, fragile breathing of my six-month-old son. The medical team worked with a clinical, lethal efficiency. They started Felix on a localized charcoal flush and a continuous intravenous fluid line to protect his tiny, developing kidneys from whatever toxin was currently circulating through his bloodstream.

Grant had been forced out into the secure waiting room by two armed hospital guards, leaving me alone with Hazel, who had crawled into the hospital chair beside me, her arms still locked around the worn belly of her grandfather's teddy bear.

At 3:15 AM, the heavy double doors of the pediatric intensive care unit swung open. Dr. Brown walked in, holding a printout from the laboratory. His face was pale, his jaw set in a tight, rigid line.

"We have the results from the toxicology scan and the video analysis," Dr. Brown said, pulling a rolling stool up to my side. He placed a warm, steady hand over my trembling fingers. "Claire, the substance your mother-in-law introduced into the infant medicine was a highly concentrated, home-brewed extract of Oleander leaves."

I blinked, the scientific name registering as nothing but letters through my exhaustion. "Oleander? The flower?"

"It’s an ornamental shrub," Dr. Brown explained, his voice grim. "It contains cardiac glycosides. In adult traditional remedies, highly diluted amounts are sometimes falsely used by unregulated practitioners. But in an infant, it acts as a direct cardiotoxin. It causes severe gastrointestinal distress, rapid spikes in body temperature, and eventually, cardiac arrhythmia. If you had listened to your husband and stayed home tonight, Felix’s heart would have failed before sunrise."

A violent sob tore out of my throat. I leaned over the crib, pressing my forehead against Felix’s warm, tiny leg. The guilt was a physical weight, crushing the breath out of my lungs. I had let that woman into my home. I had let her hold my baby, let her look down her nose at my parenting, all while she was feeding my son a substance that could have killed him.

"The hospital has placed a mandatory hold on the family," Dr. Brown continued, his eyes shifting to the door where the police were now waiting. "Child Protective Services has been notified, and Detective Vance from the Minneapolis Police Department is outside. They aren't just investigating Beatatrice, Claire. They are investigating Grant's complicity in covering it up."
