Chapter 7 - The Custody War
The preliminary family court hearing for the permanent custody of the children took place in mid-January. Grant arrived with three high-priced corporate attorneys, looking sharp, polished, and entirely detached from the reality of his actions. He sat across the aisle from me, refusing to look me in the eye, while his legal team launched a vicious, coordinated assault on my character.
"Your Honor," Grant’s lead attorney argued, sliding a thick stack of medical files across the judge’s bench. "The mother has a documented history of generalized anxiety disorder and grief counseling following her father's passing. She has used this isolated, unfortunate medical incident with the grandmother to manufacture an extreme, alienating narrative against a loving father who simply wants to be part of his children's lives."
Sarah Jenkins stood up, her presence radiating a calm, lethal authority that filled the entire courtroom. She didn't offer a speech about emotions. She submitted three pieces of evidence into the record.
First, the certified laboratory toxicology report proving the presence of Oleander glycosides in Felix’s blood. Second, the text message from Grant instructing his mother to covertly medicate our son to circumvent my medical choices. And third, the psychological deposition from Dr. Rostova, detailing the emotional abuse and threats Beatatrice had used against Hazel to enforce her silence.
The judge, a formidable, sharp-eyed woman named Judge Evelyn Vance (no relation to Grant’s family), reviewed the documents in absolute, heavy silence for ten long minutes. The tension in the courtroom was so thick you could hear the soft hum of the radiator against the wall.
When Judge Vance looked up, her gaze was fixed directly on Grant, her eyes filled with an icy, unyielding disgust.

"You stand here accusing your wife of anxiety, yet the evidence shows that your own profound cowardice and negligence nearly resulted in the death of your six-month-old son. You actively participated in a conspiracy of emotional abuse against your seven-year-old daughter to protect your mother’s criminal enterprise."
She struck her gavel down with a sharp, echoing crack. "The emergency order is made permanent. Claire Vance is granted sole legal and physical custody of Hazel and Felix Vance. Grant Vance is denied all visitation rights, directly conditioned upon the outcome of his pending criminal negligence trial. Furthermore, a permanent restraining order is issued against all members of the extended Vance family. Court is adjourned."
