Chapter 4 - The Legal Separation

The sun rose over Minneapolis in a blur of gray sleet and freezing rain. By 9:00 AM, Felix’s fever had finally broken, dropping down to a safe 99.1 degrees as the intravenous flush successfully cleared the last remnants of the cardiotoxin from his system. He opened his big blue eyes, looking up at me with a soft, milk-drunk smile that made me cry tears of pure gratitude.

But while the medical battle was winning, the legal war was just commencing.

I retained Sarah Jenkins, the most aggressive family law attorney in the Twin Cities, before noon. She met me right in the hospital room, her briefcase bursting with immediate emergency filings.

"We aren't just filing for a standard divorce, Claire," Sarah said, her pen flying across the paperwork as she sat at the small bedside table. "We are filing for an emergency ex-parte order of protection. Full legal and physical custody of both Hazel and Felix, with zero visitation rights for Grant until the criminal investigation into his potential complicity is concluded."

"Did he know, Sarah?" I asked, feeding Felix a bottle of formula with shaking hands. "Did he know what she was doing?"

"The police pulled his text records this morning," Sarah revealed, her voice dropping. "Two days ago, Grant texted his mother: 'Claire is talking about taking Felix to the pediatrician again for his cough. Can you give him something to quiet her down?' He might not have known it was lethal poison, Claire, but he actively encouraged his mother to covertly medicate your son just to manage your perceived 'anxiety.' That makes him a criminal conspirator in the eyes of the family court."

When Grant’s attorney attempted to serve a counter-filing three days later, demanding that I return to our marital home with the children, Sarah hit them with the protection order and the text logs.

Grant was ordered by a family court judge to vacate our house within twenty-four hours, allowed only a single suitcase of clothes, escorted by a county sheriff's deputy. He was banned from entering the children's school, their daycare, or any hospital where they were receiving care.

The castle of gaslighting he had spent a decade building had turned into a prison of his own making.
