Chapter 3 - The Confrontation in the Corridor

I left Hazel under the watchful eye of Mrs. Gable, the veteran night-shift nurse who had brought my daughter a cup of warm milk and a coloring book. I walked out into the secure corridor, my military-grade jacket zipped to my chin, my heart hardened into something cold and unbreakable.

Grant was pacing the waiting room, his hair disheveled, shouting at a young female police officer who was blocking the exit.

"This is a violation of my rights!" Grant roared. "My mother is a prominent member of the community! She don't belong in a police station! Claire! Tell them! Tell them you're just stressed because of your postpartum anxiety!"

I walked straight up to him. I didn't yell. I didn't lose my control. I looked at the man I had spent nine years trying to please—the man who had spent the last twelve hours telling me I was crazy while our son’s heart was fighting a lethal toxin.

"The lab found Oleander extract in his blood, Grant," I said, my voice cutting through his panic like a razor blade. "Your mother systematically poisoned our baby. And you sat on our sofa, calling me an anxious, hysterical woman because you were too much of a coward to ever question your mother."

"She didn't know it would hurt him!" Grant stammered, his eyes darting toward the police officers who were drawing closer. "She—she thought it was a natural cure! Claire, please, if this goes public, my firm will drop me. My mother’s boutique business will be ruined. We can handle this internally! We can just tell her not to watch the kids anymore!"

"Internally?" I whispered, a cold, mocking laugh escaping my lips. "She threatened our seven-year-old daughter. She told Hazel that if she spoke up, we would get divorced and it would be her fault. She weaponized our child's fear to hide her crime."

The heavy glass doors of the waiting room slid open. Two state troopers walked in, flanking a detective in a dark trench coat. They didn't look at Grant. They looked at me.

"Claire Vance?" the detective asked. "I'm Detective Reyes. We have executed a search warrant at your mother-in-law's estate in Wayzata. We found the laboratory setup in her basement, along with the matching amber bottles. Beatatrice Vance has been placed under arrest for first-degree attempted manslaughter and child abuse."

Grant collapsed onto the waiting room chairs, his face buried in his hands, groaning as the reality of his mother’s arrest shattered his perfect, fragile world. I turned my back on him, walking toward the detective with my head held high.

"What do you need from me, Detective?" I asked. "I have the phone, the video, and I am ready to sign whatever it takes to ensure she never sees daylight again."
