Chapter 1 - The Device in the Dark

Vanessa’s drunken smirk began to fray at the edges as I held up my phone. The screen wasn't displaying a banking app or a text message. It was displaying a live, scrolling feed of data packets originating from a localized IP address hidden inside our own home.

"You think you’re smart, Vanessa," I said, my voice cutting through the freezing ballroom like a sheet of ice. "You thought that by firing the nannies I hired and replacing the mansion’s security staff with your own friends, you completely controlled what I saw. You thought those pre-recorded videos of my daughters smiling and playing that you sent me every week were foolproof."

Vanessa took a step back, her designer heels clicking sharply against the champagne-soaked marble. "Nathan, you're being paranoid. I don't know what tech gibberish you're looking at, but—"

"It's an encrypted military-grade audio transceiver," I interrupted, walking slowly toward her. "I am the CEO of Caldwell Systems, Vanessa. Did you honestly believe I wouldn't notice a massive, unauthorized data drain on my own home server? Two weeks ago, I noticed a secondary firewall had been erected. So before I walked through that door tonight, I deployed a logic bomb into the house network."

I tapped the screen. A crisp, clear audio recording began to play over the ballroom's auxiliary emergency speakers.

It was Vanessa’s voice, sharp, cruel, and completely sober, recorded just three days ago: “If those little brats cry one more time about being hungry, lock them in the west wing pantry. I don't care if it's freezing. If Nathan calls, tell them they'll never see him again if they make a sound. We need to keep him happy until the trust fund papers are transferred to my LLC next month.”

The guests in the room gasped. Several of Vanessa’s so-called high-society friends looked away in sheer disgust.

Vanessa’s face went entirely pale, the diamonds around her neck suddenly looking like a heavy noose. "Nathan... that... that's AI-generated! You're framing me!"

"The police are already at the bottom of the mountain, Vanessa," I said, my eyes blazing with a fury she had never seen before. "And they aren't just coming for child endangerment."
