Chapter 7 - The Journey Back to Childhood

The trial was swift. With an overwhelming mountain of digital evidence, financial audits, and eyewitness testimonies from base security and medical professionals, both Vanessa and Julian pleaded guilty to avoid a maximum life sentence. Vanessa was sentenced to fifteen years for child abuse, corporate fraud, and extortion. Julian received twelve years in a federal facility.
The venom had been drained from our lives. Now, the real work began: rebuilding the shattered worlds of my four little girls.
I officially resigned as CEO of Caldwell Systems, appointing a trusted, long-time ally to run the day-to-day operations while I retained majority ownership. My new full-time job was being a father.
We stayed at the warm mountain cabin. The first month was agonizingly slow. Emma still hid food under her pillow, terrified that the kitchen would suddenly lock up again. Lily would flinch if I closed a door too loudly, and Sophie and Grace refused to sleep unless all the lights in the hallway were kept on.
But I was there for every single moment.

When Emma woke up screaming from a nightmare at 3:00 AM, I was the one who ran into her room, pulling her into my lap and singing the old lullaby Claire used to sing.
