Chapter 2 - The Silent Exodus

Within ten minutes, the flashing red and blue lights of the Aspen Police Department illuminated the snow-covered driveway. The guests fled the mansion like rats abandoning a sinking ship, leaving their expensive fur coats and half-empty glasses behind.
Two female officers immediately rushed upstairs to the west wing, accompanied by paramedics I had personally called. I watched as they wrapped Emma, Lily, Sophie, and Grace in heavy, heated blankets. My heart broke all over again when Sophie whimpered, hiding her face in a paramedic’s jacket, terrified that she was being punished.
"Mr. Caldwell," the lead sergeant said, stepping into the ballroom where Vanessa was being held by two deputies. "We have eyes on the condition of the children. The state of that room, the freezing temperature, and the food source... it's a clear-cut case of severe neglect and child abuse. We are placing her under arrest immediately."
"Wait!" Vanessa screamed, thrashing against the handcuffs. "You can't arrest me! I am a Caldwell! Nathan, tell them! I have a prenuptial agreement that guarantees me a lifestyle! You can't do this to me!"
"The prenup you signed, Vanessa," I said, standing tall as my daughters were gently carried down the stairs in blankets, "contains a strict moral turpitude and criminal conduct clause. The moment those handcuffs clicked around your wrists, you became entitled to exactly zero dollars of my estate."
She looked at me with venom in her eyes. "You think you've won? You're never home! You're a failed father! They'll remember that I was the one here, not you!"
May you like
"They will remember that I came back," I whispered. "And they will remember that I eradicated you from their lives."
As the police dragged her out into the blizzard, I turned my back on her forever.
