Chapter 5 - The Ambush at the Boardroom

On December 26th, while the world was still recovering from Christmas, an emergency board meeting was called at the Caldwell Systems headquarters in Denver. Julian Vance had called it himself, thinking I was still trapped in Aspen dealing with the fallout of my wife’s arrest.

When I walked into the glass-walled boardroom, the room fell dead silent. Julian was sitting at the head of the table, flanked by three high-priced corporate attorneys.

"Nathan," Julian said, feigning a look of deep sympathy as he stood up. "We are all so incredibly sorry to hear about the tragedy at your home. The media is having a field day with Vanessa’s arrest. The board is deeply concerned about the reputational damage to the company. We feel it might be best if you take an indefinite leave of absence to... sort out your family dynamics."

I didn't take a seat. I walked to the end of the table, leaning my hands heavily on the polished mahogany.

"You always were a terrible actor, Julian," I said smoothly.

Julian’s smile faltered. "Nathan, please, let's not let emotion get the better of us. We have a fiduciary duty to the shareholders—"

"I’m not talking to the shareholders, Julian. I’m talking to a thief," I interrupted. I gestured to the massive projector screen on the wall. The display flashed to life, revealing the complete, unredacted audit of the Cayman Islands shell company, alongside the direct cryptographic keys signed by Julian’s personal digital signature.

"This is an illegal corporate espionage and grand larceny scheme," I announced to the stunned board members. "Julian Vance, in collusion with Vanessa Caldwell, systematically embezzled funds meant for children's hospitals to finance a hostile corporate takeover."

Julian’s face turned an ugly shade of gray. "This is a fabrication! You can't prove this!"

"The Federal Bureau of Investigation is waiting in the lobby, Julian," I said, pointing toward the double doors. "I handed over the complete file at 6:00 AM this morning. You aren't taking my company, and you sure as hell aren't taking another dime from my family."

The doors flew open, and federal agents stepped into the room, ending Julian’s corporate career in a matter of seconds.
