Chapter 4 - The Financial Viper

By morning, the news of Vanessa Caldwell’s arrest had sent shockwaves through the corporate and social circles of Aspen and New York. But as I sat in the cabin’s study while my daughters slept peacefully upstairs, my lead forensic investigator, Marcus, initiated a secure video call.

"Nathan, we've just cracked Vanessa's personal offshore accounts," Marcus said, his face grave. "It’s much deeper than just neglecting the kids to save money. She was actively embezzling from the Caldwell Foundation—the charity funds set up in Claire's memory."

I narrowed my eyes. "How much, Marcus?"

"Over the last four months, she funneled nearly three million dollars into a shell company registered in the Cayman Islands," Marcus revealed, pulling up a series of transaction records on my screen. "But here’s the kicker: she didn't act alone. The bank transfers were authorized by an insider within Caldwell Systems. Someone gave her executive administrative access while you were overseas."

A cold realization washed over me. Vanessa was a social climber, but she didn't have the technical expertise to bypass my company’s multi-layered security firewalls.

"Who authorized the access, Marcus?"

"Your Chief Financial Officer, Julian Vance," Marcus replied. "According to the logs, he’s been orchestrating a quiet corporate buyout. They were planning to use the scandal of your 'neglectful parenting'—which Vanessa was documenting—to declare you unfit to run the company, force a board vote, and seize control of Caldwell Systems."

I stared out the window at the pristine white snow. They hadn't just tortured my daughters for amusement; they had used my precious little girls as pawns in a corporate execution plot.

"Marcus," I said, my voice dangerously calm. "Initiate Project Blackout. Freeze every single asset connected to Julian Vance and the shell company. Let's see how well they dance when the stage collapses."
