Chapter 9 - CRACKS IN THE FACADE

Desperation makes weak men reckless. Sensing that the media narrative wasn't moving fast enough to force Stella into a private financial settlement, Gavin took a dangerous gamble.

On Thursday afternoon, as the bell rang at Hazel and Paige’s elementary school in Edina, Gavin parked a rented sedan two blocks away. Disguised in a heavy coat and sunglasses, he approached the school playground perimeter, waiting near the fence line where the younger children played.

"Hazel! Paige!" Gavin called out softly through the chain-link fence, holding out a box of plastic toys.

Hazel froze, holding Paige’s hand tightly. Instead of running to him, the eight-year-old stepped firmly in front of her little sister, her young face hardening with remarkable bravery.

"We don't talk to you without Mommy's security guards," Hazel said in a clear, ringing voice.

"I’m your father!" Gavin hissed, reaching over the fence to grab Hazel's arm. "Your mother stole you from me!"

Before his fingers could touch her coat, two tall, plain-clothes security officers from Summit's executive protection team materialized on either side of Gavin. Within seconds, Gavin was pinned against the hood of a car, handcuffed, and stripped of his phone.

Ten minutes later, Stella arrived at the scene in her armored SUV. She stepped out onto the curb, her presence radiating absolute authority. She looked down at Gavin, who was kneeling on the pavement in handcuffs, gasping for breath.

"You tried to lay a hand on my daughters," Stella said, her voice dropping into a chilling, lethal register.

"They're my children too, Stella!" Gavin yelled hysterically. "You ruined my life!"

"You ruined your own life the day you decided weakness and deceit were acceptable," Stella replied coldly. She turned to the lead police officer. "File criminal charges for attempted child abduction, violation of a restraining order, and harassment."

As the police cruiser drove Gavin away, Stella knelt down and wrapped her arms around Hazel and Paige. Hazel looked into her mother's eyes and whispered, "I wasn't scared, Mom. I knew you'd come."

"I will always come for you, my loves," Stella promised, kissing their cheeks. "Always."
