Chapter 11 - TRIAL BY FIRE
The following month, the Hennepin County District Court hosted the most publicized civil and criminal trial of the year.
The courtroom was packed with press, business figures, and supporters of the Hazel & Paige Foundation. Sitting at the defense table were Gavin and Meredith, both wearing orange jumpsuit uniforms, flanked by court-appointed public defenders after their high-priced lawyers abandoned them due to unpaid bills.
Across the aisle, Stella sat beside Marcus Vance, immaculate, composed, and radiant.
The state prosecutor presented overwhelming evidence: recorded phone calls, intercepted wire transfers from Sterling’s offshore accounts, forged bank affidavits, and security camera footage of Gavin’s attempt to approach the children at school.
When Meredith was called to the stand, she broke down in uncontrollable tears under cross-examination.
"He told me we would get our money back!" Meredith sobbed, pointing a trembling finger at Gavin. "He said Stella was vulnerable! I didn't want to forge the documents! I just wanted my old life back!"
Gavin sat motionless, his face hollow, his arrogance completely shattered. When it was his turn to speak, he couldn't even look Stella in the eye.
The jury deliberated for less than forty-five minutes.
