Chapter 2 - THE ST. CLOUD CONSPIRACY

In a cramped, airless studio apartment in St. Cloud, Meredith sat staring at a cold cup of instant coffee. The glamour of her past life had vanished, replaced by the hum of an old refrigerator and a pile of unpaid utility bills. Across from her sat Gavin, his hands rough from six months of working at a high-pressure call center in Duluth.

"Sterling’s lawyer called me this morning," Gavin whispered, leaning over the Formica table. His voice was laced with a desperate, manic energy. "He said if we sign these affidavits claiming Stella hid off-shore accounts during the divorce, Sterling will deposit two hundred thousand dollars into a trust in the Caymans for us."

Meredith’s eyes flickered with a dangerous, greedy spark. "Is it legal, Gavin? The last time we tried to fight Stella, my mother lost her retirement savings to that catering judgment."

"Stella ruined us, Meredith!" Gavin spat, his jaw clenching. "She turned my daughters against me! She converted my family estate into a shelter for pathetic women! Sterling has the money to break her non-profit status. We just need to give him the ammo."

Two days later, a mysterious legal petition was filed with the Minnesota Department of Revenue. The document contained sworn statements signed by Gavin and Meredith, accusing the Hazel & Paige Foundation of tax fraud and money laundering. Concurrently, a local scandal blog published an article questioning Stella’s financial integrity.

When Stella received the news in her office at Summit Development Alliance, she didn't panic. She sat back in her leather executive chair, looking at the sensational headlines on her screen.

"They bit the bait," Stella said calmly to Marcus Vance, who stood across her desk.

"They did more than bite," Marcus replied, handing her a tablet. "They committed perjury. We have audio recordings from our covert investigators of Gavin meeting Sterling’s representative at a roadside diner in St. Cloud, accepting a ten-thousand-dollar cash advance in exchange for signing the false statements."

Stella’s lips curved into a cold, decisive smile. "Let them celebrate their temporary victory, Marcus. We let the media build this up until Friday. Then, we crush them in front of the entire state."
