Chapter 2 - The Mansion’s Web

The heavy steel door swung fully open. Through the gap between the hanging dust ruffle and the floor, Emma saw two pairs of shoes step into the sterile light: Isabella’s pristine white silk heels and a pair of scuffed black leather medical shoes.

"Where is he?" Dr. Mercer’s voice sharpened with sudden alarm. "He was right here on the mattress ten minutes ago!"

Isabella’s heels froze. The air in the room grew suffocatingly dense. "What do you mean, where is he? He’s a nine-year-old child who can barely stand! Scan the room!"

Emma squeezed her eyes shut, pressing Ethan harder against her chest. She could feel the boy’s heart hammering wildly against her ribs. The flashlight in her apron pocket was off, but she held her breath, praying the shadows beneath the low frame would conceal them.

Dr. Mercer stepped toward the table, kicking over an empty plastic bottle. "The keycard scanner recorded an unauthorized door release three minutes ago... someone pushed the door open from the outside!"

"Search the house! Search the grounds!" Isabella barked, her calm, polished persona completely shattering into raw, venomous fury. "If William finds out the boy never left Manhattan, we are finished! Find him before he reaches the ballroom!"

The sound of footsteps sprinted back toward the stone staircase, their voices fading as they rushed up toward the main floor.

Emma didn't waste a single second. She slid out from beneath the bed, pulled Ethan onto her back, and scrambled out of the steel door. She sprinted up the narrow stone steps, her knees trembling under the weight of the boy and the sheer terror driving her body forward.

Reaching the top, she peeked through the crack behind the baroque frame. The narrow staff hallway was currently empty, though the distant thump of the ballroom orchestra still reverberated through the floorboards above.

Emma pushed the painting open, slipped out into the corridor, and swung the heavy frame back into place. She carried Ethan into a nearby laundry chute room, locked the deadbolt, and set him down gently on a pile of clean linens.

"Emma..." Ethan whimpered, grabbing her wrist with a weak grip. "Where is my dad?"

"He's upstairs in the ballroom, sweetie," Emma said, kneeling beside him and wiping tears from his pale cheeks. "I'm going to take you to him right now."

"No!" Ethan gasped, his eyes widening in pure terror. "You can't! Isabella... she told Dad that I hate him now. She told him I was acting crazy because I missed my mom. Dad believes everything she says! She gives him special tea every night... he sleeps all the time and forgets things!"

Emma froze as the horrifying scope of the conspiracy began to take shape in her mind. Isabella hadn't just married William Sterling for his billions; she was systematically isolating him, drugging him, and removing his only heir so she could assume complete financial control over the Sterling real estate empire.

Suddenly, the knob of the laundry room door rattled violently.

"Emma?" a sharp voice called out from the hallway. It was Mrs. Gable, the stern head housekeeper. "Are you in there? Mrs. Sterling wants all house staff assembled in the grand foyer immediately! One of the guests lost a diamond bracelet, or so they claim."

Emma looked at the vent cover near the floor—a narrow service duct used for laundry transport that led straight out to the rear service alley behind the mansion.

"Ethan," Emma whispered, kissing his forehead. "I need you to be the bravest boy in the world. Can you crawl through that tunnel to the outside driveway?"

Ethan looked at the dark metal duct, then back at Emma. He swallowed hard and nodded. "Will you come with me?"

"I'll be right behind you," Emma promised, unscrewing the vent grille with her pocket knife. "Go straight to my blue car parked near the trash bins. Hide under the back blanket and don't move until I get there."

The laundry room door handle rattled harder. "Emma Torres! Unlock this door this instant!" Mrs. Gable demanded.

Emma watched as Ethan wriggled into the dark duct work, his small feet disappearing into the metal tunnel. She quickly replaced the grille, wiped her wet cheeks, threw on her bright yellow gloves, and unlocked the heavy door.

Mrs. Gable stood in the hallway, her arms crossed, her eyes glinting with suspicion. "What were you doing in here with the door locked?"

May you like

"I... I was feeling dizzy, Mrs. Gable," Emma stammered, pulling her cleaning apron straight. "I just needed a drink of water."

Mrs. Gable leaned closer, her sharp eyes scanning Emma's disheveled hair and the mud stains on her knees. "You look like you've seen a ghost, Torres. Put your tray away and get to the foyer. Mrs. Sterling is watching everyone very carefully tonight."
