Chapter 7 - Confrontation in the Moonlight

Detective Delgado stepped into the bedroom, his pistol aimed low and steady at Isabella’s chest. "Isabella Sterling! Keep your hands where I can see them! NYPD!"
Isabella didn't flinch. She leaned back in her leather chair, crossing her long legs, her white satin gown shimmering under the moonlight. She looked utterly unfazed by the presence of armed police officers in her bedroom.
"Detective," Isabella said smoothly, her voice cool and condescending. "You are trespassing in a private residence without a valid warrant. I suggest you lower your weapon before my legal team destroys your career."
"I have a Supreme Court search warrant sitting in my pocket, Mrs. Sterling," Delgado replied coldly. "Along with a warrant for your arrest for child endangerment, kidnapping, and illegal administration of controlled substances."
Isabella let out a soft, elegant laugh that echoed hauntingly in the quiet room. "Kidnapping? What child? My stepson Ethan is currently attending a private summer camp in Maine. Ask my husband."
She turned her head slightly toward the bed. "William... darling, wake up. The servants are causing a scene again."
She reached out and gently shook William’s shoulder.
William groaned softly, his head rolling to the side. His eyes fluttered open, but they were completely glassy, unfocused, and bloodshot. He looked at Isabella, then at Delgado, then at Emma, but there was no recognition in his face—only a empty, hollow confusion.
"Isabella...?" William rasped, his voice barely a whisper. "Why is it... so dark? Where is... my tea?"
"Look at him, Delgado," Emma said, her voice shaking with rage as she stepped forward, pointing at the teacup on the table. "She’s poisoning him every single night! She’s using Scopolamine to erase his memory so he can't ask about Ethan!"
"That is a absurd accusation from a disgruntled housekeeper who was caught stealing silver last week!" Isabella snapped, her eyes finally flashing with a burst of real anger.
"We found the sub-basement, Mrs. Sterling," Delgado said, his voice hard as iron. "We found the stainless-steel bed. We found the keycard logs with your personal master code. And ten minutes ago, we rescued Ethan from the 10th Precinct medical unit."
The mention of Ethan’s rescue hit Isabella like a physical blow. Her composure faltered for a tiny fraction of a second, her jaw tightening as she realized her dark secret had been completely dragged into the light.
Suddenly, William’s hand moved on the bed. He reached out and knocked the silver tray off the side table. The porcelain teacup shattered against the hardwood floor, spilling the dark, milky tea across the rug.
"Ethan...?" William muttered, his voice suddenly sharp with a flicker of raw, maternal fear breaking through the fog of the drugs. "Did you... did you say Ethan? Where is my son?!"
Isabella reached into her gown pocket, her hand closing around a small silver whistle—a silent radio trigger designed to signal her private security team.
"Don't move your hand!" Delgado barked, taking a step closer.

Before Isabella could press the trigger, the double doors of the bedroom were kicked open.
Dr. Mercer burst into the room holding a loaded compact handgun, his face pale with frantic panic. "Isabella! The SWAT team is downstairs! They've breached the sub-basement server room!"
