Chapter 8 - The Falling Empire

"Drop the gun!" Delgado roared, swinging his sidearm toward Dr. Mercer.

Panic erupted in the master suite. Dr. Mercer fired a chaotic shot toward the doorway. The bullet shattered a tall floor mirror near Emma’s head, sending sharp shards of glass raining down onto the carpet.

Delgado returned fire instantly. A sharp gunshot echoed through the high-ceilinged room, striking Dr. Mercer in the shoulder. The doctor stumbled backward, dropping his pistol, and collapsed against the carved wooden wall, groaning in pain as police officers swarmed into the room to disarm and handcuff him.

In the confusion, Isabella sprang from her chair like a panther, snatching Mercer’s dropped gun from the floor, and backed toward the floor-to-ceiling glass doors leading out onto the high-rise balcony.

"Nobody come any closer!" Isabella screamed, her smooth persona completely gone, her face contorted in maniacal rage as she held the gun with two trembling hands. "I built this plan for three years! I spent eighteen months pretending to love a weak, grieving widow! I am not going to let a pathetic house cleaner ruin my life!"

Emma stepped out from behind Delgado, standing directly in Isabella’s line of sight. She felt no fear—only a profound, burning anger for the boy who had suffered in the dark beneath the mansion.

"It's over, Isabella," Emma said quietly, her voice ringing clearly through the ruined room. "You lost. Ethan is safe. William knows the truth. There is nowhere left for you to run."

Isabella looked behind her, at the two-hundred-foot drop off the balcony down to the concrete street below. The wailing sirens of dozens of NYPD police cruisers echoed from the avenues below, their red and blue lights flashing against the fogged glass windows of Sterling Manor.

William pushed himself up from the bed, stumbling on unsteady legs, holding onto the bedpost for support. He looked at Isabella holding the gun, then at the blood on the floor, and finally at Emma. The cloud in his mind was slowly breaking under the sheer shock of the gunfire.

"Isabella..." William gasped, his voice trembling with horror as he looked at his new wife. "What... what did you do to my boy?!"

Isabella looked at William, her eyes cold as ice, completely devoid of any human empathy. "You were so easy to fool, William," she sneered bitterly. "You were so broken after Sarah died that you believed every sweet word I gave you. You were a pathetic, weak fool."

She raised the gun toward William’s chest.

"No!" Emma shouted, throwing herself forward.

Delgado fired two precise shots. The bullets struck Isabella’s forearm. She shrieked in pain, dropping the gun onto the balcony floor, and collapsed to her knees as SWAT officers tackled her to the ground, pulling her arms behind her back and snapping steel handcuffs around her wrists.

As they dragged Isabella past William, she glared at Emma with pure, unadulterated venom.

Emma didn't look away. She stood tall, her yellow gloves stained with dust, holding her head high as the billionaire’s fake bride was led away into the dark night in chains.
