Chapter 5 - Safe Haven

The blue sedan burst into the gated parking courtyard of the 10th Precinct, its tires screaming as Emma slammed on the brakes, stopping directly beneath the bright industrial lights of the police station.

Within seconds, Detective Frank Delgado pushed through the double glass doors of the station, flanked by four armed uniformed officers with pistols drawn.

The black security SUV that had been tailing Emma pulled up to the entrance gate of the parking lot, paused for three tense seconds under the glare of police weapons, and then backed up rapidly, disappearing into the dark city rain.

Emma collapsed over her steering wheel, sobbing uncontrollably as the adrenaline left her body in a rushing wave.

Delgado opened her driver's side door gently. "Emma. You're safe. Get out of the car."

Emma scrambled into the backseat first, gathering Ethan into her arms, wrapping him in her wet jacket before stepping out onto the asphalt. "Frank... look at him. Look at his arms."

Delgado knelt beside the boy, his weathered face hardening into stone as he saw the puncture marks, the severe dehydration, and the terrified look in the child's eyes. He turned to one of the uniformed officers. "Call an unmarked police ambulance immediately. Get the department pediatrician down here under top-secret protocol. Nobody leaks a word of this to the press."

Ten minutes later, inside a secure, private interview room on the third floor of the precinct, Ethan was wrapped in a dry blanket, eating a sandwich and drinking juice while a female police medic gently tended to his arms.

Emma sat across from Delgado, laying her thrift-store digital camcorder on the wooden table between them.

"Everything is on this card," Emma said, her voice shaking but resolute. "Photos of the hidden room behind the painting, the drug vials, the restraints, and the medical records left on the table. Dr. Mercer and Isabella Sterling did this to him."

Delgado plugged the camera into his laptop, his screen illuminating with the crisp, terrifying images. He scrolled through them slowly, his jaw clenching tighter with every picture.

"This is forced chemical confinement and attempted child endangerment," Delgado muttered, looking up at Emma. "If William Sterling didn't authorize this, his new wife is looking at twenty years in state prison."

"William doesn't know, Frank!" Emma insisted, leaning across the table. "They're drugging his tea! He thinks Ethan is in Maine! He looked completely out of it at the party tonight. His mind is slipping away every single day!"

A knock echoed at the interview room door. A younger detective stepped inside, holding a crisp folder.

"Detective Delgado," the officer said quietly. "We just ran the toxicology panel on the boy's blood sample taken by the medic. He has heavy traces of 'Scopolamine' and liquid 'Lorazepam' in his system. Those are high-grade medical amnesiacs and heavy sedatives. In high doses... they cause permanent neurological damage in children."

Emma covered her mouth, fresh tears spilling over her eyes.

Delgado stood up, pulling his badge and sidearm from his desk drawer. "That's all the probable cause I need. I'm getting a search warrant signed by a Supreme Court judge right now."

"Frank, wait," Emma said, standing up. "Isabella has lawyers and security everywhere. If you march up the front steps of Sterling Manor with a warrant, she'll destroy the basement room before you reach the front door. She’ll claim I kidnapped Ethan and made up the whole story."

Delgado paused, looking at Emma. "What are you suggesting?"

"I know the house," Emma said, her eyes flashing with a fierce determination. "I know where William’s private office is, and I know where she keeps his medication. I have to go back in there with you."
