Chapter 1 - SHADOWS IN THE STAIRWELL

The silence of the fifth-floor hallway was shattered not by a sound, but by the weight of intention.

Adrian "Stone" Moretti did not move like a man who was caught off guard. In the brutal hierarchy of the Chicago Outfit, men who reacted out of surprise were buried before winter. He moved like a shadow disentangling itself from the stone, stepping out from the recessed nook near the rusted fire escape just as the two enforcers reached the threshold of Apartment 5B.

"What the hell are you looking at, old man?" the scarred one spat, raising his bat.

He never finished the sentence. Adrian didn't draw a gun—a firearm made noise, and inside 5B, a three-year-old child was placing a moldy heel of bread beside a photo of her dead father. Instead, Adrian closed the distance in half a heartbeat. His gloved hand caught the scarred man by the throat with terrifying precision, driving him backward into the damp plaster wall. Before the taller man could swing, Adrian’s right elbow cracked into the bridge of his nose.

"You're making too much noise," Adrian whispered. His voice carried the sub-zero chill of Lake Michigan in January.

The taller man clutched his bleeding face, eyes wide with sudden, sickening recognition. "Moretti... Mr. Moretti. We... we didn't know. We were just collecting for Donati!"

"Tell Donati," Adrian said softly, "that the debt is settled. If I see either of you near this building again, I will not use my hands. I will use a meat hook. Am I clear?"

They fled like beaten dogs. Adrian turned toward the cracked door, watching little Emma share the dry crust of bread with her exhausted mother, Sofia. The sight fractured something inside the cold mob boss.

Later that night, Adrian paid a personal visit to Mario Donati’s auto shop. He didn't just clear Sofia’s debt; he forced Donati out of Chicago forever with a fifty-thousand-dollar golden handshake and a promise of death if he ever returned.

Returning to his sprawling estate, Adrian walked up to the long-locked west wing. For three years, since the car bomb killed his wife and daughter, he had kept Claire’s room sealed. Tonight, with tears finally cutting through his frozen exterior, Adrian turned the brass handle and opened the door.

The next morning, when Sofia arrived at the estate with Emma, Adrian handed her a heavy brass key.

"Pack your things," Adrian commanded quietly. "You and Emma are moving into the west wing today. You will no longer clean my floors, Sofia. You will live here. As my family."

May you like

Sofia gasped, tears spilling over her lashes. Emma peered out from behind her mother’s skirt, clutching her ragged doll. "Mister? Is the dead garden going to have flowers again?"

Adrian sank to one knee, looking the little girl in the eye. "Yes, little one. We're going to plant new flowers today."
