Chapter 5 - BLOOD ON THE HEARTH

The storm broke two weeks later on a rainy Thursday midnight.
The rain was falling in relentless sheets over Lake Forest, the thunder rolling across the dark skies like artillery fire. Inside the estate, the grand house was dark and quiet.
Adrian sat in his library, reviewing financial ledgers by the dim light of a desk lamp. Something was off. The perimeter sensors on the eastern fence line had flickered twice in the past hour. Frank had gone down with three guards to inspect the line, assuming the storm had knocked a tree branch onto the wire.
Suddenly, the power to the entire mansion cut out.
The room plunged into pitch darkness.
Adrian was on his feet in less than a second, his dark Beretta 9mm drawn from his shoulder holster with trained fluidity. He didn't wait. He moved toward the door just as the loud, sharp crack of suppressed automatic gunfire echoed through the lower floor.
An breach.
Lorenzo Rossi hadn't heeded the warning. He had hired foreign mercenaries—professionals who didn't care about underworld politics, only the contract.
Adrian sprinted down the dark hallway toward the west wing. His heart was hammering against his ribs—not out of fear for his own life, but out of a sickening terror that history was about to repeat itself. He could not lose them. Not again.
"Sofia!" Adrian shouted over the sound of breaking glass and shouting down below.
He kicked open the door to the west wing suite. Sofia was standing in the middle of the room, clutching a weeping Emma to her chest, her eyes wide with sheer panic as flashlight beams swept across the courtyard outside.
"Adrian!" she cried out.
"Get in the closet! Now!" Adrian ordered, grabbing her arm and shoving her toward the heavy, reinforced panic closet hidden behind the master wardrobe.
"What about you?!" Sofia screamed over a burst of gunfire that shattered the bedroom window, glass raining down around them.
"I'll draw them away!" Adrian shouted back. He grabbed Emma’s small face in his hands, looking into her terrified brown eyes. "Listen to me, little one. Keep your mother safe. Do not make a sound until I come back for you. Do you promise me?"
Emma sniffled, nodding bravely through her tears, clutching her doll tight. "I... I promise, angry man!"
Adrian forced Sofia inside the hidden compartment, sliding the heavy steel-reinforced door shut just as three armed men in black tactical gear burst into the outer drawing room.
Adrian didn't retreat. He became the monster the Chicago underworld feared.
He stepped out into the hallway, firing three precise shots. The first two rounds took the lead gunman in the chest; the third hit the second mercenary through his visor. The third attacker lunged with a combat knife, but Adrian caught his wrist, twisted the arm until the bone snapped through the jacket sleeve, and drove his knee into the man's ribs before executing him with a point-blank shot.
The hallway was filled with smoke and the harsh smell of cordite.
Below the grand staircase, Frank and the remaining Moretti loyalists were pushing back the remaining intruders. The firefight was short, brutal, and decisive. The mercenaries hadn't expected the mansion to be turned into a tactical kill-zone within seconds.
When the last gunshots died down, replaced only by the sound of heavy rain pouring through shattered windows, Adrian stood at the top of the stairs, breathing heavily, his suit stained with blood and gunpowder.
Frank ran up the steps, his chest heaving, holding a tactical flashlight. "Boss! Are you hit?!"
"I'm fine," Adrian rasped, wiping a cut on his forehead. "The house is secure?"
"Secured," Frank confirmed. "We took two of them alive. The rest are dead. Boss... this was Rossi. One of the mercs has a North Side tattoo under his tactical gear."
Adrian’s face transformed into an mask of absolute, unadulterated vengeance. "Keep the prisoners in the basement. I'll deal with them in an hour."
He turned and hurried back into the west wing, his hands shaking as he disengaged the electronic lock on the panic closet.
The door slid open. Sofia was huddled on the floor, shielding Emma with her body. When she saw Adrian standing in the doorway, blood dripping down his temple, she let out a choked sob, threw her arms around his neck, and pulled him down to her.

"You're alive... thank God, you're alive," she sobbed into his shoulder.
Adrian froze for a second, startled by the warmth of her embrace, before wrapping his strong arms tightly around her and the little girl. He buried his face in Sofia’s rain-damp hair, pulling them both against his chest until the trembling in his limbs finally stopped.
