Chapter 6 - THE BROKEN PROMISE

By dawn, the mansion was swept clean, the broken glass cleared, and additional guards deployed along every inch of the thirty-acre perimeter.
In the subterranean holding cell beneath the mansion's original wine cellar, Adrian sat across from the captured mercenary captain. The man was strapped to a heavy steel chair, blood dripping from his split lip onto his tactical vest.
Frank stood in the shadows, his arms crossed over his chest.
"I'm only going to ask you once," Adrian said, his voice terrifyingly calm as he cleaned his fingernails with a small silver pocketknife. "Who gave you the layout of the estate?"
The mercenary spat blood onto the concrete floor. "Go to hell, Moretti. We got the blueprint from an anonymous digital drop. We don't know who—"
Adrian slammed the knife into the wooden table between them, the blade vibrating with lethal force. "You knew about the security blind spot on the east wall. That blind spot wasn't on any public blueprints. Only my inner circle knew about it. Who sold it?"
The mercenary swallowed hard, realizing he wasn't dealing with a businessman, but an executioner. "It... it was an old file! A ledger from three years ago! Lorenzo bought it off an auto mechanic's old records!"
Adrian stopped. His eyes narrowed. "An auto mechanic?"
"Yeah!" the man pleaded. "Some guy named Antonio Romano! He used to do custom armor plating for mob cars four years ago! He kept digital backups of security systems for the vehicles he worked on! Lorenzo found the backup drives in the guy's old workshop last month!"
The air in the room seemed to freeze.
Frank stepped forward out of the shadows, his eyes wide with shock. "Boss... Antonio Romano? Sofia’s dead husband?"
Adrian stood up slowly, his face drained of color.
Antonio Romano hadn't just been a innocent victim of circumstance. He was a mechanic who had worked on elite vehicles for the Chicago syndicates—including the very car that had been rigged with the bomb three years ago that killed Elena and Claire.
Whether Antonio knew about the bomb or was merely an unwitting pawn used by Lorenzo Rossi, his hands had touched the vehicle that destroyed Adrian's world.
Adrian walked out of the basement without another word, his head spinning in a tempest of dark memories and conflicting emotions.
He walked up to the main library, pouring himself a tumbler of straight scotch. He stood at the window, staring out at the rose garden where little Emma was currently sitting on the grass, holding her rag doll, watching her mother pick up fallen tree branches from the storm.
Did Sofia know?
Did she enter his home four months ago seeking employment out of pure desperation, or was she carrying the dark legacy of her husband's secrets?
The doubt threatened to tear Adrian’s heart to pieces. For four months, he had felt alive again. He had begun to fall in love with the quiet, resilient woman whose tired eyes matched his own. He had begun to view Emma as a second chance at fatherhood.
The door to the library opened softly.
Sofia stepped inside. She was carrying a tray with fresh coffee and a plate of warm toast. She looked exhausted, but when her eyes found Adrian, a gentle, beautiful smile touched her lips.
"Adrian," she said softly, placing the tray on his desk. "Frank said you hadn't eaten. I made you—"
"Sofia," Adrian interrupted, his back still turned to her, his voice flat and ominous. "Tell me about Antonio."
Sofia paused, her smile faltering. "Antonio? Why... why are you asking about him now?"
Adrian turned around slowly. His eyes were dark, cold, and stripped of all the warmth he had shown her over the past weeks.
"What did your husband do for living, Sofia? Before he died."
Sofia blinked, confused by the sudden interrogation. "He was a mechanic. He had a small shop in Cicero. You know this..."
"Who were his clients?" Adrian demanded, taking a step toward her. "Did he do work for Lorenzo Rossi? Did he work on my cars?"
Sofia looked at him as if he had struck her. Tears immediately gathered in her eyes. "Adrian... what are you saying? Antonio was a good man! He fixed family cars, delivery trucks—"
"He built custom armor for mob vehicles!" Adrian roared, slamming his hand onto the mahogany desk. "And his workshop files contained the security blueprints to my estate! Blueprints that Lorenzo Rossi used to send killers into this house last night!"
Sofia gasped, stumbling back a step, her face turning ghost-white. "No... no, that's impossible... Antonio didn't... he would never—"

"Did you know?" Adrian asked, his voice shaking with a terrifying blend of anger and despair. "Did you bring his child into my home knowing his hands helped destroy mine?!"
Sofia stood paralyzed, looking at the man she had come to care for deeply, seeing the wall of grief and suspicion slam shut between them once more.
