Chapter 8 - THE PRICE OF REDEMPTION

The North Side industrial complex was an iron fortress. Lorenzo Rossi had barricaded himself inside a converted meatpacking plant, surrounded by thirty armed loyalists, expecting a siege.

He didn't expect a war.

At two in the morning, two heavy armored snowplows smashed through the outer concrete gates of the complex. Behind them came four black Moretti SUVs.

The night exploded into chaos.

Automatic fire shredded the dark sky. Tracers lit up the rain like deadly fireworks. Adrian stepped out of his vehicle, flanked by Frank and twenty of the most brutal enforcers Chicago had ever seen.

Adrian moved through the gunfire like an unstoppable force of nature. He wasn't taking cover; he was advancing, firing with terrifying lethal precision, clearing room after room, driving through Rossi’s defenders like wheat before a scythe.

"Where is Lorenzo?!" Frank shouted over the deafening roar of a shotgun blast.

"Upper office!" Adrian called back, ejecting an empty magazine and slapping a fresh one into his Beretta without slowing his pace.

They fought their way up the heavy iron catwalks. The floor was slick with blood and rain pouring through bullet-riddled skylights.

Adrian kicked open the heavy steel door of the master office.

Lorenzo Rossi was waiting inside behind a heavy oak desk. He looked half-crazed, his expensive coat thrown aside, holding a submachine gun in his trembling hands.

"Moretti!" Lorenzo screamed, raising the weapon. "You should have stayed dead three years ago!"

Before Lorenzo could pull the trigger, Adrian fired two rounds. The first struck Lorenzo’s shoulder, knocking him backward against the glass window overlooking the processing floor. The second shattered the gun in his grip.

Lorenzo collapsed onto his knees, screaming in pain, clutching his shattered shoulder.

Adrian walked slowly across the office, stepping over the spent shell casings. He stood over Lorenzo, his gun pointed directly between the man's terrified eyes.

"Three years ago," Adrian said, his voice terrifyingly quiet, "you put a bomb under my car. You killed a mother and a five-year-old child."

"It was business, Adrian!" Lorenzo shrieked, tears and sweat pouring down his face. "It was just business! The Outfit needed new leadership! I... I didn't know your kid was in the car!"

"And last month," Adrian continued, ignoring the man's pleas, "you tried to murder another mother and another child. A child who was trying to feed her mother moldy bread."

"Please, Stone! Please!" Lorenzo begged, dropping his head to the floor. "I’ll give you everything! The North Side! My accounts in the Caymans! Ten million dollars! Just let me walk!"

Adrian stared down at the pathetic creature squirming at his feet.

For three years, Adrian had lived for this exact moment. He had envisioned tearing Lorenzo apart, feeding him to the cold soil, feeling the satisfaction of revenge.

But as he looked down at the gun in his hand, he suddenly saw little Emma’s innocent face. He remembered her soft voice: "Mommy said silver makes things stronger."

If he pulled this trigger in cold blood, he wasn't saving his new family—he was damning himself forever. He was staying the ghost of the mausoleum.

"No," Adrian whispered.

Lorenzo blinked, looking up in disbelief. "What?"

Adrian lowered his gun slightly. "Death is too clean for you, Lorenzo. You're going to spend the rest of your life in a maximum-security federal prison. Federal agents are raiding your accounts right now. Every ledger you kept on Antonio Romano, every murder you ordered—it's all on its way to the US Attorney's office."

Lorenzo’s face twisted in desperate, cornered rage. "You arrogant bastard!"

With a sudden, violent surge, Lorenzo pulled a hidden snub-nosed revolver from his ankle holster and lunged upward.

BANG.

A shot rang out in the confined office.

Adrian ducked, but the bullet tore through his left shoulder, driving him back against the wall. Before Lorenzo could fire a second time, Frank Valetti burst through the door and fired a single shot from his heavy .45 revolver.

Lorenzo Rossi slumped forward, hitting the floor face-first, his eyes rolling back as life drained from his body.

Frank rushed to Adrian’s side, supporting the wounded boss as he slid down the wall, clutching his bleeding shoulder.

"Boss! Boss, stay with me!" Frank yelled, pressing a cloth to the wound.

Adrian closed his eyes, pain blinding his vision, but a quiet, incredible peace settling over his soul. The nightmare was finally over.

"Frank..." Adrian gasped, his breath coming ragged.

"I'm here, Adrian! Hold on!"

"Take me home," Adrian whispered. "I have a promise to keep."
