Chapter 10 - A TABLE FULL OF BREAD

Six months later.
Spring had fully arrived in Chicago. The thirty acres of the Moretti estate were blooming with vibrant green trees, singing birds, and fresh air carrying the sweet scent of blooming flowers.
The Chicago Outfit was no longer the terror-driven empire it had once been. Under Adrian’s new leadership, the syndicate had shifted entirely away from extortion, loan-sharking, and street violence, transforming into a legitimate real estate and security enterprise. The streets of Cicero were quiet; small businesses flourished without fear of predators like Donati or Lorenzo.
In the central courtyard of the estate, the dead garden was dead no longer.
Hundreds of vibrant red, white, and pink roses bloomed under the warm May sun. In the center stood a beautifully crafted white marble fountain, its clear water sparkling in the sunlight.
A long wooden dining table had been set up on the patio near the garden.
Mrs. Gable and the kitchen staff were laying down silver platters filled with roasted chicken, fresh salads, bowls of ripe strawberries, and pitchers of sweet lemonade. Frank Valetti sat at the end of the table, wearing a dark suit without a shoulder holster, laughing as he showed Emma how to fold a napkin into a paper swan.
Adrian stepped out onto the patio.
He was dressed in a simple white linen shirt and trousers, looking relaxed, healthy, and younger than he had in ten years. His left shoulder still carried a faint scar, but his eyes were clear and bright.
Sofia stepped out beside him, wearing a flowing yellow summer dress. Her hair was swept back, her skin glowing. She looked at Adrian, holding his hand tightly, their fingers intertwined.
"Look, Mommy! Angry Man! Look at the bread!" Emma squealed, running up to them in her bright pink sun-dress.
She pointed to the center of the long table.
Sitting on a silver platter in the middle of the feast was a massive, golden-brown loaf of freshly baked Italian bread—warm, aromatic, and whole.
Adrian smiled—a genuine, deep smile that reached all the way to his soul.
He walked over to the table, sat down, and pulled little Emma onto his lap. Sofia sat down beside him, resting her hand on his shoulder.
Adrian picked up the bread knife, sliced off a thick, warm piece of bread, spread rich butter over it, and handed it to Emma.
"No sharing half-loaves today, little princess," Adrian said softly, his voice thick with profound happiness. "There's enough for everyone."
Emma took a giant bite, her face covered in crumbs, laughing as she held up her small doll. "Daisy says thank you, Daddy Adrian!"
Adrian looked up at Sofia. Her eyes met his, filled with a deep, boundless love.

He reached across the table, took her hand, and pressed a kiss to her knuckles.
The mausoleum was gone. The ghosts were finally at peace. And in the heart of a home once ruined by grief, a new family sat together under the warm spring sky, sharing a table full of bread.
