Chapter 4 - The Unholy Alliance

The rain outside turned into a torrential downpour as night fell over the city.

In a hidden, dimly lit penthouse high above the financial district, two men sat across from each other at a glass table.

On one side sat Harlan Vance, his face haggard, dark circles weighing down his eyes. On the other side sat Julian Calloway—a man in his late fifties with silver hair, sharp features, and a jagged scar running from his ear down to his collarbone. Julian was Royce’s uncle, the former ruler of the Calloway syndicate, a man known for his ruthless cruelty and utter lack of honor.

"You're late, Harlan," Julian said, pouring himself two fingers of scotch. "I don't like waiting, especially when I've just spent eight million dollars buying off border guards to get back into this damn city."

"The police are everywhere," Harlan said nervously, wiping sweat from his forehead with a handkerchief. "Royce has frozen all my accounts. My daughter Cordelia is traumatized! He destroyed my life in less than twelve hours!"

Julian took a slow sip of his drink, a cold, mocking smirk on his lips. "Royce is efficient. I'll give him that. I built the empire, but my nephew turned it into a fortress. He eliminated every threat... except me."

"He has a weakness now," Harlan interjected eagerly, leaning across the table. "That’s why I called you! He didn't just attack me for business. He did it for a woman. A waitress!"

Julian paused, his dark eyes narrowing with intense interest. "A waitress?"

"Della Marsh," Harlan said, sliding a folder across the glass table. "She’s five months pregnant. Cordelia had a minor altercation with her at the hotel, and Royce lost his mind. He cancelled our multi-million dollar deals on the spot and brought her directly to his private estate in the North Hills!"

Julian opened the folder, looking at surveillance photographs of Della leaving the hospital and stepping into Royce’s armored SUV. His eyes lingered on the visible scar on the back of her right hand.

Suddenly, Julian’s eyes went wide. A low, raspy laugh began to bubble up from his chest.

"Well, well, well," Julian chuckled, his laughter growing darker, filling the quiet penthouse. "The girl with the scar."

Harlan blinked in confusion. "You know her?"

"Six years ago," Julian said, his eyes glittering with malicious realization, "my hitmen had Royce cornered in an alley. He was bleeding out. He should have died that night. But a girl pulled him into a basement apartment and hid him. My men told me a young woman with a glass bottle stood in their way and lied to them."

Julian slammed his glass down on the table, shattering the base.

"For six years, Royce searched for that girl like she was the Holy Grail," Julian sneered, his face twisting into a bitter mask of hatred. "He kept her bloodstained cloth in his office like a sacred relic! I thought she was a myth... and now, my foolish nephew has brought her right into his home!"

"So what do we do?" Harlan asked, his voice shaking with a mix of excitement and terror.

"We take her," Julian said simply. "Royce thinks his fortress in the North Hills is impenetrable. But he forgets that I built that house. I know every secret tunnel, every security override, and every blind spot in its perimeter."

Julian leaned forward, his scowl transforming into a predatory smile.

"We take the pregnant waitress," Julian whispered. "And when Royce comes to trade his life for hers... I will finally kill my nephew and reclaim my throne. And as for you, Harlan... you get your money back, and your daughter gets her revenge."

Harlan swallowed hard, but the greed and desire for retribution swallowed his fear. "When?"

"Tonight," Julian said, standing up and pulling a black coat over his shoulders. "Before Royce realizes I'm in the city. Call your contacts. We strike at midnight."

Back at the Calloway Estate, the atmosphere was tense.

Royce had placed the entire compound on high alert. Double security details patrolled the perimeter walls, infrared cameras monitored the treeline, and Franka was stationed in the main security control room, tracking every signal within a five-mile radius.

In the private dining room, Della sat across from Royce. A quiet meal sat largely untouched between them.

"You're not eating," Royce said gently, looking up from his plate.

"I'm not very hungry," Della admitted, resting her hand over her stomach. "Royce... who is Julian? Why is he so dangerous?"

Royce placed his fork down and leaned back in his chair, his expression growing somber.

"Julian is my father’s younger brother," Royce explained smoothly. "When my father died, Julian tried to take total control of the syndicate. He operated with pure brutality—extortion, human trafficking, violence without restraint. When I challenged him six years ago to clean up the business and turn it legitimate, he tried to have me executed."

"The night in the alley," Della whispered.

"Yes," Royce nodded. "After I recovered, I waged a two-year war against his faction. I stripped him of his power, handed his criminal operations over to federal authorities, and forced him out of the country. But Julian is a snake. He doesn't care about honor. He only cares about revenge."

Della looked down at her lap, her heart pounding with anxiety. "And now he’s coming back... because of me?"

Royce immediately stood up, walked around the table, and knelt beside her chair, taking both of her trembling hands in his firm, warm grip.

"Listen to me, Della," Royce said with fierce intensity, staring directly into her eyes. "Julian is coming back because he is a coward who wants his power back. You are not to blame for any of this. You saved my life, and I will protect yours with everything I have. Do you hear me?"

Della looked at his sharp, handsome face, feeling the absolute truth in his words. Despite the danger, despite the heavy shadow hanging over them, sitting next to Royce made her feel safer than she had ever felt in her entire life.

"I hear you," she whispered softly.

Suddenly, the warm ambient lights of the dining room flickered once... twice... and then plunged the entire mansion into pitch-black darkness.
