Chapter 9 - A Life Made Whole

A month later, on a warm May evening, the quiet nursery at the Calloway Estate was filled with the soft, sweet cries of a newborn baby.
Della lay in the large, comfortable master bed, pale and exhausted, but radiant with joy. Wrapped in a soft pink blanket against her chest was a beautiful baby girl with dark, silky hair and bright, curious blue eyes.
Royce sat on the edge of the bed, holding Della’s hand tightly. Tears, unashamed and free, streamed down his handsome face as he looked at his daughter.
"She’s perfect," Royce whispered, his voice cracking with intense emotion. "Della... she’s absolutely perfect."
"Do you want to hold her?" Della asked softly, giving him an encouraging smile.
Royce, a man who had faced down armed hitmen without flinching, suddenly looked terrified. "I... what if I hold her wrong? She’s so small."
"You won't," Della reassured him softly. "You're her father. You were made for this."
Carefully, reverently, Royce slipped his broad arms under the tiny pink bundle, lifting his daughter into his arms for the very first time.
The baby instantly stopped crying. She nuzzled her tiny face against his broad chest, her tiny fingers reaching out and wrapping around his thumb.
Royce let out a soft, breathy chuckle, his heart overflowing with a love so immense it brought him to his knees emotionally. He leaned down, pressing his lips gently against the baby’s soft forehead.
"What are we going to name her?" Royce asked, looking back at Della with endless devotion.
Della looked at the two of them—the powerful man who had built a sanctuary for her, and the tiny baby who represented their beautiful new beginning.
"Clara," Della said softly. "It means 'bright and clear'. Because she brought light into both our lives."
"Clara Calloway," Royce repeated, the name sounding like music on his lips. "It’s beautiful."
Later that evening, after little Clara had fallen fast asleep in her walnut crib, Royce walked over to the standing mirror near the balcony doors.
Della walked up behind him, wrapping her arms around his waist from behind, resting her head against his back.
In the mirror, they looked at each other.
No more fear. No more running. No more cold, lonely nights in dark basements or terrifying lobbies.
"Do you remember the mirror at the hotel?" Della asked softly, looking at their reflection.
"I remember," Royce said, turning around in her arms to face her. "I used to hate that mirror for hurting you. But now... I realize that if that mirror hadn't shattered, I might have walked right past you that night. Fate broke that glass so I could finally find you again."
He cupped her cheeks, dipping his head to kiss her softly on the lips.

"You saved my life six years ago, Della," Royce whispered against her lips. "And today, you gave me a life worth living."
"We saved each other," Della smiled softly, wrapping her arms around his neck.
