Chapter 6 - The Bloodline's Reckoning

The tension in the study was so thick it seemed to push against the glass windows.

Outside, lightning flashed across the sky, illuminating the three men standing in a deadly standoff. Thunder rattled the heavy oak beams overhead.

"Look at you," Julian sneered, his silver revolver unwavering. "The great Royce Calloway, king of the city, standing in his grand office... ready to lose everything for a pregnant waitress who didn't even know your name until yesterday."

"She gave me something you never could, Julian," Royce replied coldly, his eyes locked onto his uncle's face. "Humanity."

"Humanity is a weakness!" Julian spat, taking a slow step around the massive desk. "It’s what made your father soft, and it’s what will put you in the ground tonight! Harlan, cover the door!"

Harlan Vance stepped nervously toward the side wall, his hands shaking so violently that his gun wobbled. "Julian... let's just finish this! Shoot him!"

"Shut up, Harlan!" Julian barked without taking his eyes off Royce. "I want him to know what he’s losing. I'm going to take this empire back, Royce. And after I put a bullet in your heart, I'm going down to that vault. I'm going to bring your little waitress and her bastard child out to the docks, and—"

Before Julian could finish his sentence, Royce’s eyes flashed with pure, primal rage.

BANG!

Royce fired first. The bullet struck Julian’s right shoulder, tearing through leather and muscle, knocking the older man backward against the desk.

Julian screamed in pain, firing his revolver blindly into the air as he fell.

Harlan panicked. Driven by raw fear, he raised his gun and fired at Royce. The bullet grazed Royce’s upper arm, slicing through his white shirt and drawing a line of deep crimson blood.

Royce didn't even flinch at the pain.

He turned on Harlan like a demon unleashed from hell. In two rapid strides, Royce closed the distance, grabbed Harlan’s wrist, and twisted it violently upward. The sound of snapping bone echoed through the room, accompanied by Harlan’s high-pitched scream of agony.

Royce kicked Harlan squarely in the chest, sending the wealthy businessman crashing through the glass coffee table in the center of the room. Harlan lay bleeding among the broken glass, sobbing and holding his shattered wrist, completely defeated.

Royce turned back to his uncle.

Julian was on his knees behind the desk, clutching his bleeding shoulder, trying frantically to scoop up his dropped revolver with his left hand.

Royce walked over, his dark leather boots heavy against the floor. He stepped on Julian’s wrist, pinning his hand to the wooden floorboards.

"It's over, Julian," Royce said softly, leaning down to look his uncle in the eye.

Julian panted, sweat pouring down his blood-drained face. He looked up at his nephew, seeing no mercy, no hesitation—only the cold, absolute judgment of a man who had protected what was his.

"Do it, then," Julian rasped, spitting blood onto the floor. "Shoot me."

Royce raised his gun, pointing it directly at Julian’s head. His finger tightened on the trigger.

In that fraction of a second, the image of Della’s gentle, tear-stained face flashed in Royce’s mind. He remembered her soft voice in the hospital room: Is my baby all right? He remembered the warmth of her hand against his.

If he pulled this trigger, he would be the killer his uncle wanted him to be. He would bring blood into the home he was building for her and her child.

Slowly, deliberately, Royce shifted his aim downward.

BANG!

The bullet shattered Julian’s kneecap. Julian let out a harrowing shriek, collapsing onto his side, writhing in agony.

"Death is too easy for you, Uncle," Royce said coldly, lowering his weapon. "You're going back to a federal supermax prison. And this time, there isn't enough money in the world to buy your way out."

At that moment, the heavy double doors of the study burst open.

Franka stormed in, accompanied by ten heavily armed Calloway security guards and local police officers, who had finally broken through the blockade outside.

"Mr. Calloway!" Franka shouted, taking in the scene—Julian bleeding on the floor, Harlan sobbing in broken glass, and Royce standing in the center, his shirt torn and bloody at the shoulder. "Are you hit?"

"It's a graze," Royce said calmly, wiping a smear of blood from his forearm. "Secure these two. Call the Chief of Police directly. I want Harlan Vance and Julian Calloway booked under federal terrorism and attempted murder charges by morning."

"Understood, sir!" Franka commanded, her team instantly moving in to handcuff the two defeated men.

Royce didn't stay to watch them be dragged away.

He turned, grabbed a clean cloth from his desk to press against his wounded arm, and walked rapidly out of the study, heading straight for the basement vault.
