Chapter 10 - The Brightest Sunshine

One year later.

It was a brilliant, warm Saturday morning in May.

The front yard of the Holloway estate was filled with color, laughter, and the happy chatter of neighborhood children. Streamers of bright yellow and white hung from the ancient oak trees, floating gently in the sweet southern breeze.

It was Emma’s ninth birthday party.

A massive inflatable bounce house stood on the side lawn, where half a dozen kids were jumping and shouting with pure excitement. Near the patio, a long table was covered in bright yellow decorations, a massive three-tiered chocolate birthday cake, and a pile of colorful presents.

Nathan stood near the patio grill, flipping hot dogs and burgers, wearing a silly apron that read: World’s Okayest Chef.

Victoria walked up behind him, wearing a summer sundress, placing her hands on his waist and leaning up to kiss his cheek.

"The burgers smell great, Mr. Holloway," Victoria teased softly.

"Only the best for the birthday girl," Nathan smiled, wrapping one arm around Victoria's waist and pulling her close.

Over the past year, their relationship had blossomed into a beautiful, deeply rooted romance. Victoria had officially moved into the estate three months ago, bringing a sense of complete, loving harmony to their home that Emma adored with all her heart.

"Daddy! Aunt Victoria! Look at my new trick!" Emma shouted from the lawn.

They turned to look.

Emma was wearing a bright yellow birthday dress, her hazel eyes shining with absolute joy. She took a running start across the lush green grass, executed a perfect, flawless cartwheel, and landed gracefully on her feet, raising her arms in the air like an Olympic gymnast.

Her friends erupted into applause and cheers.

Emma bowed dramatically, then came running over to the patio, her pigtails bouncing, completely out of breath.

Nathan crouched down, opening his arms wide. Emma flew straight into his embrace, her small arms wrapping tightly around his neck. Nathan lifted her into the air, spinning her around while she laughed wildly.

"Happy ninth birthday, my sweet girl," Nathan said, kissing her cheek as he set her feet back on the patio ground.

"This is the best birthday party in the whole world, Daddy!" Emma declared happily, grabbing a cup of fruit punch from the table.

She looked at Nathan, then up at Victoria, who leaned down and adjusted the yellow ribbon in Emma's hair.

"Are you happy, Emma?" Victoria asked softly, her eyes filled with maternal warmth.

Emma looked around her yard—at the bouncing children, the sunny garden, the warm house with its wide-open doors, and the two people who loved her more than life itself.

She pulled Barnaby—her old stuffed elephant, now clean and wearing a tiny yellow bow—from her pocket and held it up.

"Barnaby says we are the happiest family in Charleston," Emma announced with a bright, mischievous grin.

Nathan laughed softly, dropping down to one knee so he was at eye-level with his daughter. He picked up a small, shiny silver box from the table and handed it to her.

"One last present from Daddy," Nathan said softly.

Emma opened the box carefully. Inside lay a delicate gold necklace with a small pendant shaped like a bright yellow umbrella, set with a tiny sparkling hazel diamond in the center.

Emma gasped softly, her hazel eyes shining with tears of joy. "The umbrella..."

"To remind you," Nathan whispered, his voice thick with profound, everlasting love, "that no matter how hard the rain falls, or how dark the storm gets... Daddy will always be here to hold the umbrella for you."

May you like

Emma wrapped her arms around Nathan's neck, holding him with all her strength, whispering into his ear: "I love you, Daddy."

"I love you too, Emma," Nathan promised, holding his daughter tight against his heart under the bright, golden Carolina sun, knowing that their storm was over forever, and their home was filled with everlasting light.
