Chapter 9 - The Thanksgiving Table

Four months later.

The crisp autumn air had turned the leaves across South Carolina into brilliant shades of crimson, orange, and amber.

It was Thanksgiving evening at the Holloway estate.

The dining room table, which had once been a place of cold, strict rules under the imposter nanny, was now covered in a massive family feast. A golden roasted turkey sat in the center, flanked by bowls of mashed potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce, and warm sweet rolls.

Laughter and warm conversation echoed through the room.

Sitting around the table were Nathan, Emma, Victoria, Dr. Evelyn Harper, Maria the housekeeper, and Detective Miller, whom Nathan had invited as a personal guest to thank him for his work on the case.

Emma sat at the head of the table in an oversized chair, wearing a festive yellow sweater, her hazel eyes dancing with joy as Detective Miller performed a silly magic trick with a linen napkin and a cranberry.

"And voila!" Miller announced, pulling a shiny silver quarter from behind Emma's ear. "The magic quarter!"

Emma giggled uncontrollably, clapping her hands. "Do it again! Do it again, Mr. Miller!"

"Dinner first, young lady!" Maria chuckled warmly from the end of the table, passing a bowl of sweet potatoes to Dr. Harper. "Or no pumpkin pie for dessert!"

Nathan stood up at his seat, holding a glass of sparkling apple cider. He tapped his fork gently against the glass.

The room quieted down, everyone looking up at him with warm smiles.

"I just want to say a few words," Nathan began, his voice soft but resonant with deep emotion. "A few months ago, I thought this house was just wood and stone. I thought my job as a father was measured by my paycheck and my corporate title."

He looked down at Emma, who was staring up at him with rapt attention, holding her stuffed elephant Barnaby in her lap.

"I learned the hard way that a home isn't built with money," Nathan continued, his eyes glistening. "It's built with love, with presence, and with the people who step up to protect you when the world gets dark."

Nathan looked around the table at each person present.

"To Evelyn, for healing my daughter's body. To Miller, for seeking justice. To Maria, for bringing warmth back to our kitchen. And to Victoria..." Nathan paused, looking deeply into Victoria's warm eyes, "...for being our protector, our anchor, and our light when we needed it most."

Nathan raised his glass. "To family. The ones we're born with, and the ones we choose."

"To family!" everyone echoed around the table, clinking their glasses together in warm celebration.

After dinner, as the guests mingled in the living room near the roaring fireplace, Nathan stepped out onto the back porch. The chilly autumn night air felt crisp and refreshing against his skin.

A moment later, Victoria walked out, wrapping her coat tightly around herself, holding two mugs of warm spiced cider.

She handed one mug to Nathan. "Beautiful toast, Nathan."

"It was the truth," Nathan said, taking a sip of cider. He looked out at the dark garden where the sunflowers were resting under the autumn sky.

Victoria leaned against the porch railing beside him. "Emma seems completely back to herself. She scored the highest in her class on her reading test this week."

"I know," Nathan smiled proudly. "She told me three times on the drive home."

They stood in comfortable silence for a moment, listening to the crackle of the fireplace from inside and the faint sound of Emma laughing with Maria.

"Victoria?" Nathan spoke softly.

"Yes, Nathan?"

Nathan turned to face her. He reached out, gently taking her hand in his. His grip was warm, strong, and sincere.

"I don't know what the future holds," Nathan said softly, looking into her eyes. "But I know that I don't ever want to face it without you in our lives."

Victoria’s breath caught slightly. A warm, tender smile spread across her lips as her fingers intertwined with his.

May you like

"You don't have to, Nathan," Victoria whispered gently. "I'm not going anywhere."

Nathan leaned down, pressing a soft, lingering kiss against her cheek, feeling her hand squeeze his tightly under the starlit autumn sky.
