Chapter 7 - Rebuilding the Foundation

Two months after the trial, the Holloway home had completely transformed.

The cold, sterile atmosphere that had once been maintained by strict domestic staff was replaced by warmth, life, and color. The quiet hallways were now filled with Emma’s framed artwork, stackable board games in the living room, and the delicious scent of home-cooked meals every night.

Nathan had hired a new housekeeper—a warm, jovial grandmother named Maria who came highly recommended by Dr. Harper. Maria worked only three days a week during school hours, insisting that evenings belonged strictly to family time. She treated Emma like her own granddaughter, baking fresh blueberry muffins every Thursday morning and teaching her how to plant sunflowers in the back garden.

One Saturday afternoon, Nathan was in the garage assembling a brand-new pink bicycle with a white wicker basket on the front.

A sharp horn honked in the driveway.

Nathan wiped his hands on a rag and stepped out into the sunshine. Victoria Vance walked up the driveway, wearing comfortable jeans and a sweater, carrying a white bakery box.

"Is the bike ready for its maiden voyage?" Victoria asked with a warm smile.

"Almost," Nathan chuckled, nodding toward the garage. "Just tightening the handlebars. What's in the box?"

"Fresh apple cider donuts from the farmer's market," Victoria said, holding up the box. "I thought the chief tester might want a bribe."

From the back garden, Emma came running around the corner, her hair tied in two pigtails, holding a wooden magnifying glass. "Aunt Victoria!"

Emma had taken to calling Victoria 'Aunt Victoria' over the last month, a title Victoria accepted with immense pride and affection.

"Hey, kiddo!" Victoria crouched down, catching Emma in a big hug. "Look at you! Did you find any bugs in the garden?"

"I found a red ladybug on Maria's sunflowers!" Emma announced proudly. "And Daddy said if I practice riding my bike today, we can go to the ice cream shop near the pier!"

"That sounds like a solid plan," Victoria smiled, tapping Emma's nose gently. "Go tell Maria to put these donuts on a plate, okay?"

"Yay! Donuts!" Emma grabbed the box carefully and ran into the house.

Nathan watched her go, a soft, contented expression on his face. He turned to Victoria. "How are the legal proceedings closing out?"

Victoria’s expression shifted into a professional, satisfied calm. "The plea deals are finalized, Nathan. Margaret Vance agreed to a ten-year sentence without parole for felony child abuse and fraud. Clara Mercer rejected a plea deal, which was a massive mistake on her part."

Nathan raised an eyebrow. "What happened?"

"The judge sentenced her to fifteen years in state prison yesterday," Victoria reported softly. "The court also stripped her of all legal standing regarding Sarah's estate. The trust fund has been permanently placed under an independent bank guardianship that automatically transfers to Emma when she turns twenty-one."

Nathan let out a long, slow breath. The final piece of lingering anxiety in his chest seemed to dissolve into the warm Carolina breeze.

"It’s really over," Nathan said quietly.

"It's really over, Nathan," Victoria agreed softly. She looked at him with deep respect. "You saved her. You did what a father is supposed to do."

"I just did what any parent who loves their child would do," Nathan replied, stepping back into the garage to grab his tools. "Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a bike to finish. My daughter has an ice cream appointment at the pier."
