Chapter 3 - Unraveling the Web

By dawn, the storm had passed, leaving behind a crisp, fog-shrouded morning.
Three dark sedans pulled up the long brick driveway of the Holloway estate. Victoria Vance stepped out of the lead vehicle, wrapped in a sharp charcoal trench coat, followed by two senior investigators from her firm and a forensic digital specialist.
Nathan met them at the front door. He had showered, changed into a black sweater, and brewed a fresh pot of coffee, though he hadn't slept a single second.
"How is Emma?" Victoria asked immediately, stepping into the foyer and handing her coat to an assistant.
"Sleeping," Nathan said, his face drawn and pale. "She's exhausted. I have a pediatrician—a close personal friend—coming at eight to do a full physical evaluation."
"Good," Victoria nodded firmly. She gestured to her lead investigator, a burly former detective named Miller. "Miller, sweep the nanny's quarters first. Check for flash drives, paperwork, personal ledgers, and any hidden recording devices. I want every inch of this house cataloged."
While Miller moved upstairs, Victoria sat down with Nathan in the kitchen.
"I did a preliminary background check on Eleanor Grayson on my drive down," Victoria said, opening a sleek leather folder on the marble island. "Nathan, something doesn't add up. Eleanor Grayson is a real person with thirty years of elite nanny credentials. She worked for a judge in Greenwich for a decade."
Nathan frowned. "Then how could she do this?"
"That’s the point," Victoria said, her eyes narrowing. "The real Eleanor Grayson retired to a private care facility in Vermont six months ago after suffering a stroke. She hasn't worked in a year."
Nathan froze, his coffee cup hovering halfway to his mouth. "What?"
"The woman who was living in your house," Victoria said grimly, "is using a dead-woman's identity with high-level forged documents. She was placed in your home by an internal referral through the domestic agency's top account manager."
Nathan’s jaw tightened. "Who was the account manager?"
Victoria turned a page in her folder. "A woman named Clara Mercer. Does that name ring a bell?"
Nathan stared at the paper. The name hit him like a physical blow.
Clara Mercer was his ex-wife's younger sister—Emma's aunt.
Five years ago, when Nathan’s wife, Sarah, tragically passed away from illness, Clara had launched a bitter legal battle to gain co-guardianship of Emma, claiming that Nathan’s demanding corporate career made him an unfit father. The court had thrown out the lawsuit, affirming Nathan’s full parental rights. Since then, Clara had vanished from their lives, cutting off all communication.
"Clara..." Nathan whispered, his blood running cold. "Clara works at the domestic staffing agency?"
"She was hired as a senior placement director eight months ago," Victoria revealed. "She personally vetted 'Eleanor Grayson' and assigned her exclusively to your estate when you submitted a request for full-time care during your Boston acquisition project."
The horrifying puzzle pieces began clicking together in Nathan’s mind with brutal, sickening clarity.
This was never just about a cruel nanny or a strict housekeeper. This was a calculated, deliberate attempt to break Emma, document her emotional decline, and build a systematic case of parental neglect against him.
"She wanted me to fail," Nathan realized, his voice trembling with a terrifying blend of rage and shock. "Clara planted that woman here to abuse Emma, isolate her, make her look malnourished and traumatized, so she could petition the court for emergency custody while I was away in Boston!"
Before Victoria could answer, Miller walked down the service stairs holding a small, clear evidence bag containing a heavy black tablet and three thumb drives found in Eleanor's nightstand.
"Mr. Holloway, Ms. Vance," Miller said, his face solemn. "We found something on her private device. You need to see this."
Miller placed the tablet on the counter and tapped the screen.
A video file opened. The timestamp indicated it was recorded three weeks ago inside Emma's bedroom.
On the screen, the fake Eleanor Grayson stood over Emma while the little girl sat weeping on her bed. The woman’s voice was cold and commanding: "If your father cared about you, Emma, he wouldn't leave you alone with me every week. He’s building a new life in Boston. He doesn't want a messy, useless child dragging him down."
On the video, Emma sobbed quietly, clutching her elephant, whispering: "No... Daddy loves me..."
"He doesn't," the woman on the screen sneered. "Look at this room. You don't deserve this house. Soon, your Aunt Clara will come take you away to a place where you'll learn your place."
Nathan stood up so fast his chair crashed backward onto the floor.
He stared at the screen, his chest heaving, his eyes burning with tears of pure, unadulterated fury. The sheer evil required to inflict such psychological torture on an eight-year-old child was beyond anything he had ever encountered in his life.
"Victoria," Nathan said, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying growl. "I don't just want them arrested. I want Clara Mercer, that fake nanny, and anyone who helped them locked in a federal prison for the rest of their lives."

Victoria closed her folder with a sharp click.
"Don't worry, Nathan," Victoria said, her eyes flashing like steel. "They just handed us a slam-dunk criminal conspiracy case. And I am going to destroy them."
