Chapter 6 - Healing the Wounds

The weeks following the court trial moved with a gentle, healing slowness.

With Clara Mercer and Margaret Vance safely behind bars facing federal charges of child endangerment, conspiracy, and fraud, the dark shadow that had hung over the Holloway estate finally dissolved completely.

Nathan had officially stepped down from his executive travel position at his firm, taking a permanent role as head of local operations in South Carolina. His suit jackets were replaced by comfortable sweaters, his luxury hotel bookings replaced by quiet evenings in the kitchen cooking dinner with his daughter.

Every morning, Nathan woke up early, cooked pancakes with extra chocolate chips, and personally walked Emma to the front gate of her elementary school, holding her small hand every step of the way.

Yet, despite the safety and love surrounding her, the psychological scars of those two months did not vanish overnight.

On a rainy Tuesday afternoon—exactly three weeks after the trial—a sudden clap of thunder echoed over the estate.

Nathan was working in his home office when he heard a quiet, terrified gasp from the hallway.

He immediately dropped his pen and ran into the hall.

Emma was standing near the front door, staring out the glass side-panels at the pouring rain outside. Her small body was trembling, her hands clutched tightly around her stuffed elephant, Barnaby.

"Emma?" Nathan called softly, stepping slowly toward her.

Emma didn't look at him. She was staring at the driveway where the trash bins sat beside the fence.

"I... I forgot to sweep the porch," Emma whispered frantically, tears welling in her hazel eyes. "Daddy, the rain is starting. The bins... I didn't take out the bins..."

Nathan felt a sharp pang in his heart. He realized that the sound of the rain was triggering the terrifying memory of being forced out into the storm.

Nathan didn't hesitate.

He didn't lecture her or tell her not to be afraid. Instead, he walked over to the closet, pulled out two bright yellow raincoats and two pairs of oversized rubber boots.

"Come on, sweetie," Nathan said with a warm, playful smile.

Emma looked at him in confusion. "What?"

"We have a very important job to do," Nathan said, kneeling down and helping her slide her feet into the bright yellow boots. He wrapped her in the yellow raincoat, then put on his own.

He opened the front door, stepping out into the pouring rain.

"Daddy, what are we doing?" Emma asked, taking a hesitant step onto the wet porch.

Nathan walked right down into the middle of the driveway, letting the rain splash over his hood. He looked back at her and grinned. "We're going to kick the trash bins over!"

Emma’s eyes went wide. "What?!"

"You heard me!" Nathan laughed loudly. He walked over to the heavy black trash bins beside the fence, lifted his boot, and knocked the empty bin over onto the grass with a loud THUD.

Emma gasped, covering her mouth with her hands.

"Your turn, Emma!" Nathan called out, rain dripping off his nose. "Come on! The bins were mean to you. Let's show them who's boss!"

Emma stood on the porch for three seconds, looking at her father laughing in the rain. Slowly, a tiny smile broke across her face. Then a giggle.

She ran down the porch steps in her big yellow boots, her feet splashing through the puddles. She ran up to the second trash bin, leaned her small body against it, and pushed with all her might until it fell over onto the wet lawn with a massive splash.

"I did it!" Emma cheered, jumping up and down in a puddle, water flying everywhere. "I knocked it over, Daddy!"

"That's my girl!" Nathan roared with laughter.

He scooped her up into his arms, spinning her around in the middle of the rainstorm. Emma's bright, joyous laughter filled the entire garden, ringing out louder than the thunder, washing away the cold, terrifying memories of the past.

For the first time in months, her hazel eyes sparkled with pure, unadulterated happiness.

"Daddy?" Emma asked, wrapping her arms around his neck as the rain poured over them both.

"Yes, sweetie?"

May you like

"I like the rain now," Emma whispered softly, resting her cheek against his soaked shoulder. "Because you're in it with me."

Nathan squeezed her tight, holding his daughter close against his heart under the storm, knowing that the dark days were finally behind them for good.
