Chapter 4 - The Shadow Syndicate

Two hours later, Miles sat in the glass-walled conference room of Vance Capital—a rival logistics and defense investment firm operating out of a skyscraper in downtown Chicago.

Sitting across from him was Julian Vance, a sixty-year-old billionaire titan with silver hair, impeccably tailored suits, and a reputation for ruthless corporate warfare. Julian was the father of the real Clara Vance.

"Miles," Julian said smoothly, pouring himself a glass of scotch despite the early hour. "You called an emergency session of our joint board committee. You look terrible, my boy. Travel fatigue?"

Miles didn't sit down. He stood at the end of the long glass table, resting his hands flat against the polished surface.

"Where is she, Julian?" Miles asked softly.

Julian paused, the crystal glass halfway to his lips. He chuckled softly, setting the glass down. "Where is who? My daughter Clara? I believe she’s managing your estate while you travel, isn't she?"

"Your daughter died four years ago in Seattle, Julian," Miles said, his voice cutting through the quiet conference room like a guillotine blade. "The woman living in my house, the woman who locked my seven-year-old daughter in a closet with a broken leg and starved my baby son, is an imposter you hired to breach my defense network."

Julian’s easy smile slowly faded. The air in the conference room turned ice cold.

"That is a monstrous accusation, Miles," Julian said, his eyes narrowing into slits. "I suggest you leave my office before I have security remove you for slander."

"I brought friends," Miles replied calmly.

The conference room doors swung open. Detective Miller stepped inside, followed by four federal agents from the Department of Homeland Security.

"Julian Vance," the lead agent announced, pulling an official warrant from his coat. "You are named as a primary co-conspirator in a federal indictment for corporate espionage, child endangerment, and treason against state defense supply networks."

Julian’s face flushed dark red. He slammed his glass onto the table, shattering the crystal. "This is absurd! You have no proof! A disgraced widower coming into my office making wild claims—"

"We traced the digital decryption attempt on the stolen drive ten minutes ago, Julian," Miles interrupted, pulling his satellite phone from his pocket. "Your imposter operative tried to sell the Hartley Logistics defense protocols to an offshore server in Zurich at three o'clock this morning. But the drive contained a self-executing Trojan virus that wiped your private shell accounts and transmitted your entire encrypted server history to the FBI."

Julian stumbled back, clutching the arm of his leather chair, his breathing turning ragged.

"Where is she, Julian?" Miles demanded, taking a step toward the billionaire. "Where is the woman who hurt my children?"

Julian looked at the federal agents standing at the door, then down at the ruined glass on his table. His composure shattered completely.

"She... she has a safe house near the docks," Julian stammered, his hands trembling violently. "Pier 42. She's leaving on a private cargo vessel for South America at noon!"

Miles checked his watch.

It was 11:15 a.m.
