Chapter 5 - The Trap at Pier 42

The rain began to fall over the Industrial Docks of South Chicago, turning the concrete asphalt into a slick, mirror-like surface.

Pier 42 was surrounded by towering stacks of rusted shipping containers. The cold wind off Lake Michigan whipped through the alleyways between the metal boxes, carrying the smell of salt, diesel fuel, and damp iron.

Miles stepped out of his black SUV, wearing a heavy leather coat. Behind him, three unmarked tactical vehicles carrying FBI SWAT operators took up positions along the perimeter of the pier.

"Mr. Hartley, stay in the vehicle," the SWAT team leader ordered. "We will handle the extraction."

"She’s mine," Miles said coldly, ignoring the officer as he walked straight toward a red shipping container near the edge of the dock where a private tugboat was tied to the iron cleats.

A woman in a black trench coat and dark sunglasses was rushing toward the gangplank of the vessel, carrying a heavy leather duffel bag.

"Clara!" Miles’s voice echoed across the open dock like thunder.

The woman froze.

She turned slowly, pulling off her sunglasses. Beneath her styled hair, her face was sharp, beautiful, and completely devoid of remorse. This was the woman who had hugged his children, cooked their meals, and tucked them into bed while planning their destruction.

"Miles," she said, a chilling smile spreading across her lips. "I must admit... I didn't expect you back until tomorrow. You always were overly dedicated to your work schedule."

"Where is your remorse, Clara?" Miles asked, taking slow, deliberate steps toward her. "Or whatever your real name is."

"My name is Victoria," she said smoothly, reaching into her coat pocket. "And business is business, Miles. You were an easy target. A grieving widower desperate for a woman to fix his broken home. You practically handed me the keys to your life."

"You broke my daughter's leg," Miles said, his voice dropping into a dangerous whisper. "You left a baby to starve in the dark."

Victoria shrugged, pulling a sleek nickel-plated pistol from her coat. "They were collateral damage. Children are resilient. Besides, once I reached Zurich with your defense codes, I would have been living in luxury in Switzerland while you spent the rest of your life in a federal prison explaining how your network was breached."

"Check your phone, Victoria," Miles said, stopping five paces away from her gun.

Victoria’s eyes flickered with a brief hesitation. "What?"

"Check your phone," Miles repeated calmly. "Your Swiss accounts. Your encrypted drive. Your clearance code."

Victoria pulled her phone out with her left hand, keeping her gun aimed squarely at Miles’s chest. She tapped the screen.

A bright red alert flashed across her phone screen: ALL ASSETS FROZEN - FEDERAL SEIZURE IN PROGRESS.

Her jaw dropped in absolute shock. "No... no, that's impossible! The buyer verified the transfer—!"

"The buyer was an FBI cyber-task force," Miles said coldly.

Before Victoria could pull the trigger, three red laser dots appeared directly on her chest.

"DROP THE WEAPON! FBI!" a loudspeaker boomed from the top of the shipping containers as dozens of heavily armed SWAT officers emerged from the shadows, their rifles trained on her.

Victoria stared at the laser dots, then at Miles’s icy, unforgiving eyes. The nickel-plated pistol slipped from her numb fingers, clattering loudly against the wet concrete.

Two officers tackled her to the ground, snapping steel handcuffs around her wrists.

As they dragged her past Miles toward a waiting police van, Victoria glared at him, her beautiful face contorted in rage. "You ruined everything!"

May you like

Miles looked down at her with cold contempt.

"You ruined yourself the moment you touched my children," Miles said quietly, turning his back on her as the police car doors slammed shut.
