Chapter 9 - The New Horizon

Three years after that fateful night.
The sun was setting over the calm, blue waters of Lake Michigan, painting the horizon in brilliant shades of orange, pink, and deep purple.
A gentle breeze blew through the open windows of a cozy lakefront cottage in Door County, Wisconsin, where the Hartley family was spending their summer vacation.
Miles sat on the wide wooden porch, nursing a cup of black coffee.
Beside him sat Clara—not the imposter who had tried to destroy his life, but Clara Montgomery, a kind-hearted pediatric nurse practitioner he had met through his foundation work eighteen months ago. Clara was gentle, genuine, and adored by both children, offering a warmth that was real and untainted by deceit.
Out on the grassy lawn in front of the lake, eleven-year-old Lily was helping three-year-old Tommy fly a large red dragon kite.
Tommy ran across the grass, his little legs moving as fast as they could, laughing hysterically as the wind lifted the kite high into the clear blue sky.
"Look, Dad! Look how high it's going!" Tommy shouted, pointing up at the clouds.
"I see it, buddy!" Miles called back, a wide, genuine smile gracing his face. "Keep moving with the wind!"

Clara Montgomery leaned her head gently against Miles’s shoulder, wrapping her arm through his. "They're so happy, Miles."
"They deserve to be," Miles whispered softly, wrapping his hand over hers. "We all do."
