Chapter 6 - The Long Road Back
Three weeks later.
The autumn sun shone warmly through the large bay windows of the Hartley residence. The house had been completely renovated—the dark closets opened up, the old security panels removed, and every corner painted in light, warm pastel tones.
The police investigation was complete. Victoria, whose real name was revealed to be Victoria Sterling, a notorious international corporate operative, along with Julian Vance and four other executives, were facing life sentences in federal prison.
At St. Jude’s Hospital, Lily’s leg had healed remarkably well under the care of the city's top pediatric orthopedic surgeons. Tommy had regained his weight and was back to his playful, giggling self.
Yet, physical wounds were far easier to heal than emotional ones.
Miles sat on the plush carpet of the newly designed playroom on the second floor. He had officially stepped down from his role as CEO of Hartley Logistics, appointing a trusted board member to handle daily operations while he transitioned into a non-executive Chairman role.
He didn't care about board meetings or multi-million-dollar mergers anymore. His full-time job was being a father.
"Dad?"
Lily stood in the doorway of the playroom, wearing a yellow dress and a small white walking cast on her left leg. She was holding a drawing pad in her hands.
"Come here, princess," Miles smiled warmly, opening his arms.
Lily limped across the floor, sitting on his lap and leaning her head against his shoulder. Tommy was crawling happily nearby, knocking over a tower of soft foam blocks.
"Look what I drew," Lily said softly, handing him the pad.
Miles looked down at the paper. It was a drawing of a bright yellow house with a green lawn. Standing in front of the house were three figures holding hands—a tall man, a little girl with a yellow dress, and a baby boy. Above them, painted in bright blue marker, was a large sun with smiley face rays.
"It's beautiful, Lily," Miles whispered, pressing a kiss to her forehead. "It's the most beautiful drawing I've ever seen."
"Is Miss Clara ever coming back, Dad?" Lily asked quietly, her eyes searching his face.
Miles wrapped his arms securely around both of his children, pulling Tommy into his lap beside Lily.

"Never again, sweetheart," Miles said, his voice filled with an absolute, unwavering certainty that made Lily smile. "Nobody is ever going to hurt you again. I am going to be right here with you, every single day."
Lily let out a long, happy sigh, resting her cheek against his chest as the warm autumn sun filled the room with golden light.
