Chapter 7 - The Healing Garden
Spring arrived six months later, bringing with it a tide of blooming cherry blossoms and warm lake breezes across Highland Park.
The Hartley estate had been transformed. Where cold marble floors and sterile executive decor once reigned, there was now a sprawling wooden outdoor deck, a children's treehouse built into the giant oak in the backyard, and a vibrant flower garden planted entirely by Lily and Miles.
Every morning began not with urgent corporate conference calls, but with pancake breakfasts, school runs, and laughter echoing through the sunlit kitchen.
Dr. Sarah Lin, a renowned child psychologist specializing in trauma recovery, walked out onto the back patio carrying two cups of chamomile tea. She sat down on the teak bench beside Miles, watching eight-year-old Lily happily chasing seven-month-old Tommy across the grass in her brand-new running shoes, her leg fully recovered and cast-free.
"She’s making remarkable progress, Miles," Dr. Lin said, handing him a cup. "Six months ago, she wouldn't sleep without the lights on, and every creak of the floorboards triggered a panic attack."
Miles took a sip of the warm tea, his eyes never leaving his children. "She still wakes up from nightmares occasionally. But she knows I'm right down the hall."
"You saved her, Miles," Dr. Lin said gently. "Not just from that closet, but from the belief that she was alone in the world. The trust you've rebuilt here is a miracle."
"I didn't save her, Sarah," Miles said, his voice filled with quiet emotion. "She saved Tommy. She dragged herself across a marble floor with a broken bone to save her baby brother. She showed me what real strength looks like."

Tommy let out a joyful squeal as Lily caught him near the wooden slide, rolling him onto the soft grass while both of them burst into uncontrollable laughter.
Miles looked up at the clear blue sky, feeling a deep, profound sense of peace settle over his soul. For the first time since his wife Eleanor had passed away, the heavy darkness that had gripped his heart had completely vanished.
