Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

Within an hour, the top floor of the Moretti Manor was transformed into an impenetrable fortress.

Extra guards lined every hallway, heavily armed snipers took up positions on the slate roof, and the mansion’s private medical team arrived to evaluate Alejandro. Though the epinephrine had saved his life by reversing the anaphylactic shock caused by the rare, synthetic toxin Marcus had slipped into his wine, Alejandro was still weak.

Yet, he refused to rest.

Instead, he moved Clara and me out of the small, drafty staff room in the basement and placed us directly into the Master Guest Suite—a luxurious, carpeted room on the third floor with a king-sized bed, crystal chandeliers, and a fireplace.

Mama stood in the middle of the room, looking around at the silk sheets and gold-leaf mirrors as if she were stepping into a dream—or a trap.

"Emma," Mama whispered, sitting on the edge of the plush bed and pulling me onto her lap. She checked my cheeks, my eyes, and my hands for the hundredth time. "Are you really okay? Did the bad men hurt you?"

"No, Mama," I said, holding up my pink rabbit. "Mr. Moretti was nice. He patted my head."

"Emma... do you know who that man is?" Mama’s voice was trembling. "He is the head of the Moretti Syndicate. The police don't even come to this neighborhood because of him. He is a dangerous man."

"He looked scared when he couldn't breathe," I said innocently. "Just like me."

Before Mama could answer, a gentle knock sounded at the double doors.

Marco, the chief enforcer, stepped inside carrying two large trays covered in silver cloches. Behind him came two female staff members carrying stacks of soft wool blankets, plush toys, and brand-new clothes in my size.

"Compliments of Don Alejandro," Marco said respectfully, bowing slightly toward my mother. "The Don insists you eat. The kitchen prepared roasted chicken, mashed potatoes, and strawberry shortcake."

Mama swallowed hard, clutching her apron. "Mr. Marco... we are house staff. We belong in the kitchen pantry, not..."

"Mrs. Clara," Marco interrupted gently, his rough face breaking into an uncharacteristically kind smile. "You are no longer staff. By order of the Don, you are guests of honor. Furthermore, a private team of doctors is being brought in tomorrow morning from Johns Hopkins University."

Mama blinked, confused. "Doctors? For what?"

"For Emma," Marco explained, looking down at me with immense warmth. "The Don learned that Emma gave up her last spare EpiPen to save him. He has ordered a lifetime supply of state-of-the-art medical equipment, personal automated injectors, and a dedicated pediatric allergy specialist to be assigned to your family permanently."

Mama’s hands flew to her mouth, a fresh wave of tears spilling over her eyelashes. For years, she had worked sixteen-hour shifts, scrubbing floors and washing linens, just to afford my ninety-dollar co-pays for a single pen. And now, in a single night, the crushing weight of that financial terror was erased.

Meanwhile, downstairs in the strategic war room, the mood was far less peaceful.

Alejandro sat at the head of a long steel table, surrounded by his top six capos. The air in the room was thick with cigar smoke and dark, suffocating fury.

On the large television screen mounted on the wall, the security footage retrieved from the study played in high definition.

The video clearly showed Marcus slipping a small vial of clear liquid into Alejandro’s glass. But as the footage continued past the poisoning, another figure appeared at the edge of the camera frame—someone standing outside the study balcony prior to the event, passing the vial of poison through the French doors to Marcus.

The man on the balcony wore a signet ring with a gold crest: a coiled viper over a shield.

"The Valentis," Capo Santino growled, slamming his fist onto the steel table. "Don Valenti ordered the hit. He used Marcus to do the dirty work inside our walls."

"It's worse than that, Santino," Alejandro said, his voice cold enough to freeze blood. He zoomed in on the video frame, focusing on the shadow of the man passing the vial. "Look at the cufflink on his left wrist."

The capos leaned forward.

The cufflink was made of custom platinum, shaped like an eagle's wing.

Santino gasped, his eyes wide with horror. "That's... that's corrupt Senator Harrison’s signature cufflink. The chairman of the Judiciary Committee."

Alejandro leaned back in his leather chair, his grey eyes flashing with dangerous brilliance. "The Valenti family isn't acting alone. They've partnered with the high-ranking politicians in this state to wipe out the Moretti family and seize our shipping ports."

"What are your orders, Boss?" Marco asked, stepping up to the table. "We have two hundred armed men ready. We can burn the Valenti estate to the ground by midnight."

"No," Alejandro commanded softly. "Burning them down is too easy. They tried to take my life, and in doing so, they put a four-year-old child in the crossfire of a suppressor."

He stood up, resting his hands on the table.

"They want a war," Alejandro whispered. "I will give them an annihilation. But first... we secure my new family."
