Chapter 6 - The Poisoner's Trap

By mid-afternoon, the news of Senator Harrison’s sudden "disappearance" sent shockwaves through the Chicago underworld.
Inside the fortress-like estate of Don Donato Valenti—the ruthless seventy-year-old patriarch of the rival Valenti family—chaos reigned.
Valenti sat in his heavily guarded study, slamming his fist onto his mahogany desk. Standing before him were his three sons, all heavily armed, alongside thirty of their top enforcers.
"How is he still alive?!" Valenti roared, his face purple with rage. "The toxin was supposed to paralyze his respiratory system within three minutes! Marcus swore he saw Alejandro collapse!"
"We don't know, Father!" his eldest son, Gianni, stuttered. "The report from inside the Moretti Manor says... says a child interfered!"
"A child?!" Valenti screeched. "What are you talking about?!"
"A four-year-old girl," Gianni explained nervously. "The maid’s daughter. She had some kind of medical needle... an epinephrine injector. She used it on Alejandro before the toxin could stop his heart completely!"
Valenti stared at his son in absolute, speech-less disbelief. A billion-dollar conspiracy, three years of planning, corrupt senators, and millions in bribes... all undone by a four-year-old girl with a toy backpack.
"Then find her," Valenti spat, his eyes burning with psychotic malice. "If Alejandro cares about this maid’s child, she is his weakness. I want that girl brought to me alive. We will use her to force Alejandro to surrender his shipping ports!"
Little did Valenti know, Alejandro had already anticipated his every move.
Back at the Moretti Manor, a massive convoy of armored SUVs was idling in the subterranean garage.
Alejandro stood near the lead vehicle, double-checking the tactical gear worn by his men. Mama and I were standing nearby, accompanied by two female security officers.
"Where are we going, Mr. Moretti?" I asked, holding onto my pink rabbit backpack.
Alejandro walked over, dropping to his knees so he was at eye-level with me. He reached out and gently straightened the collar of my yellow jacket.
"We are going to a very safe place, Emma," Alejandro said softly. "My private estate in the mountains. There is a lake, a playground, and horses."
"Horses?!" my eyes lit up with excitement. "Real horses?"
"Real horses," Alejandro smiled warmly. "A white one named Lily is waiting just for you."
He looked up at Mama, his expression turning serious. "Clara, my men will take you and Emma through the secure underground tunnel to the secondary convoy. Valenti’s scouts are watching the front gates. They will fall for the decoy vehicles, leaving your path completely clear."
"Thank you, Don Alejandro," Mama said softly, holding my hand tightly. "For everything."
"You don't need to thank me, Clara," Alejandro replied. "Emma saved my life. Protecting hers is my only purpose."
The convoy departed through the secret rear exit carved beneath the estate’s bedrock.
As the armored SUV glided smoothly through the dark Chicago streets toward the highway, I leaned my head against Mama’s shoulder, watching the city lights flicker through the dark tinted windows.

In my lap, my gold bracelet shimmered under the streetlights. I didn't fully understand the war happening in the dark alleys of the city, nor did I realize that at that very moment, Alejandro Moretti was leading fifty armed men into the heart of the Valenti territory to end the bloodshed once and for all.
All I knew was that for the first time in my life, Mama didn't look scared when she checked her purse for money. She looked peaceful.
